Hello,
I recently renewed my windows (10) installation on my astro laptop. Before this, everything worked just fine with my Canon DSLR, ASCOM and PHD2. But now I can´t connect my camera to PHD2. Sometimes "PixelSizeX" is missing, sometimes "CameraXSize". Even if I type in that info by hand, it won´t connect. NINA on the other hand works just fine with the ASCOM.DSLR driver and my camera. My mount (Bresser EXOS 2 with EQ5 GOTO) also works perfect with both, NINA and PHD2.

Do you have any ideas how to handle this?

Thx,
Martin

Hi Michael,
thank you for your response. No i don´t have any guiding device. I want to use my imaging camera to get a PEC curve for my mount. That´s why I will use PHD2.

Hi Martin

A DSLR probably won't work well for gathering data for a PEC via PHD due to the inherent delays in shutter actuation and download.

if you have an inexpensive astro camera that will be much better choice

If i didn't understand your intention correctly, please ignore this :)

There is an outside chance that it might work with live view, if ASCOM.DSLR supports that; I don't recall if it does or not. I don't think the odds are good, though.

It already worked once with live view, but than I forgot to park the mount and the PEC was gone. Now I just wanted to repeat it, but camera and PHD2 won`t connect.

We have little or no experience with people trying to use a DSLR with PHD2.  I don’t know how this ASCOM-DSLR driver works but I wonder if it doesn’t, itself, need a bunch of properties specified to identify what DSLR it’s trying to use.  Have you looked closely at the setup/properties dialog in that driver to see what’s required?  Things like the pixel and sensor size are fundamental pieces of information that are needed to operate the camera which is why the connection is failing.

Hi Martin

Prolonged continuous LiveView can seriously overheat the sensor - there's two pages of warnings in the Instruction Manual about this.

Hi Bruce, it seems that befor resetting my windows, PHD2 got all the information about my camera automatically, either from the camera itself or from the ASCOM DSLR driver. I didn´t type in any information about bei camera in the ASCOM driver. It just worked with the first plug in. Today I added the missing informations manually into the ASCOM driver profile explorer though, but PHD2 still says that these informations are missing. What I don´t understand is, N.I.N.A. is working fine with the ASCOM DSLR driver. I will contact the ASCOM support in parrallel, but If anyone here has other suggestions I am happy to hear them.

I may add that the camera shutter and mirror are activated three times while trying to connect to the camera, so there are some informations transfered to the camera, but seemingly there is no comunication back to the PC.

Hi Michael, thank you for mentioning this. In my manual I only find half a page about temperature warning while using Live View. The only information I can find is that if the sensor is overheating due to "exessive use" or high surrounding temperatures, there will be warning signs in the display (white or red). And if the sensor reaches a critical point, Live View will be deactivated (I don´t know if this still works if the camera ist controlled via PHD2 and ASCOM).To be sure, I activated Live View for about 40 min. (one PEC recording periode) at room temperature, but there were no warnings from my camera so I think the sensor temperature should be fine. And if I record a PEC outside at 10°C or less, there should be no problem too. Never the less I will keep an eye on the temperature topic.
