I have had good success using the ST4 and on-camera guiding with PHD2 and my EQ6R-Pro mount.  This evening, I tried using the EQMOD software to control the mount instead of the hand controller.  All was great until I started to try guiding.  I was able to get it connected, looping and trying to calibrate but it seems that PHD2 wasn't telling the mount to stop moving like it does with ST4 during the calibration process so the star never moved any significant amount and I just got an error.  Is there an extra step required here to turn off sidereal rate tracking while calibrating that isn't needed with ST4?

Thanks

Hi Jason,

I have had big problems with EQMOD/PHD2.
I started a thread here that may be of interest to you. The suggestions haven’t worked for me and has now gone quiet. Maybe you’ll have more luck.

Cheers

Is there another guiding solution that works better with eqmod?  Thanks.

I haven’t had a look yet. I have always had good results with PHD2 using st-4. Only since I recently changed to EQMOD/ASCOM I have had problems.

Hi Jason,

EQMOD comes with default settings that are not optimal for guiding with PHD2.  For best results please see here: https://github.com/OpenPHDGuiding/phd2/wiki/EQASCOM-Settings

If you still have trouble after that, please upload your log files as described here: https://openphdguiding.org/getting-help/

Hi John,
Sorry your thread went quiet.  I just posted a response over there. There are a relatively small number of people in this forum posting answers to questions relative to the number of questions being asked and sometimes things get overlooked.

OK I will try that.  Would this explain why PHD2 is telling the mount to not track while calibrating like it does during Guiding Assistant or Calibration.  One more clue is that I couldn’t get the Guiding Assistant to enable the start button while connected via eqmod.

Thanks

Just so you know, PHD2 never tells the mount to stop tracking.

When the Guiding Assistant is running, PHD2 is sending no commands to the mount at all, it is just observing the location of the guide star in each frame to see how well the mount tracks unguided.

During calibration, PHD2 is sending a series of guide pulse commands to measure how the mount responds to guide pulses (which direction and how much motion.)

One more clue is that I couldn’t get the Guiding Assistant to enable the start button while connected via eqmod.

The Start button is enabled when PHD2 once guiding has started.  There's a message at the top of the Guiding Assistant window that says "Select a star and start guiding".  Once you do that, the Start button will be enabled.

Ok. Thanks for clarifying. What I was noticing was that it was doing its calibration steps but the star was never moving very much. I’ll try the new settings and let you know. Thanks.

HI Jason

on your observation here:

>>>What I was noticing was that it was doing its calibration steps but the star was never moving very much.

if the mount was not tracking (i.e., sidereal was 'turned off') you would see star streaks instead of pinpoint stars.
