I know this issue has been raised, but I don't understand the current situation
I remember reading  somewhere that PHD2 did not play nicely with adaptive optics units.
(I plan to buy  a DL STC-7 camera and SC-2 OAG combination, and am wondering about getting the AO unit, which is labeled AO8A.)
Last night I was building a new configuration in PHD2 and followed the AO config option just to see what it would say.  There were choices for AO8 native and  AO8 INDI, and an explanation as to how PHD2 would use the unit.
So -- is this a viable unit or not?  $1000 is a lot to spend for something I can't use.
BTW if the answer is still "we don't know yet", that's fine, but I'd be grateful for any current information.

We don’t have much visibility into this.  We know PHD2 works well with the SX-AO devices and many people use them.  Once you get into the land of INDI, I would say you are entering the wild west.  The device drivers are generally less mature and things are more hit-and-miss with regard to reliability.  The two primary developers for the PHD2 project have not been at all involved in working with SBIG/Diffraction Limited AO devices.  In general, I would be pessimistic about your prospects unless you can find a community of users who have hands-on experience using the Indi AO drivers with PHD2.  You might try to find other forums to search for that, there is really no such activity here that I’ve seen.

Good luck,

Bruce

You can raise a question about the driver and user experience on the INDI forum.  Contrary to Bruce's understanding, I have generally found the INDI drivers to be robust.

Many thanks, Bruce. I’ll think it over. Btw sorry I mentioned INDI — just reporting what I saw. My rig is Meade, and I use either native drivers or ASCOM.

Hi all,
FYI, I have been using SX-AO for a few months now it works great with my MYT mount (using the SKYX driver) and the PHD2. My average guideRMS is 0.4-0.45arcsec with 1sec guide exposures.
rgrds,
Andreas
