Hi Scott,
I would not hesitate to use the dev series versions. Bruce and I both use them in our observatories. "insider dev testing" happens in isolation and that is not what the dev series builds are used for. I understand how this can be confusing. Our strategy is to have two types of releases:
major releases - for those who are reluctant to make any version updates (updated ~6 months or so)
dev releases - more frequent updates (4-8 weeks) that have the latest bug fixes, features, and hardware support
The dev releases are stable and suitable for use. Like any software, a bug can slip through our internal testing and work its way into a dev release. If that happens we fix it ASAP and put out a new dev release. You can look at the the
dev release history to see how often this has happened and make your own assessment.
Re: 2.6.6: there are a number of changes teed up for a 2.6.5dev7 release and a few more in the pipeline. We'll probably do a 2.6.6 release after 2.6.5dev7.
Re: native vs ASCOM camera drivers: either option is ok. All other factors being equal I tend to prefer native mode camera drivers as it eliminates an unnecessary software layer. In some cases the ASCOM driver is preferable because it provides additional capability or additional camera support. In other cases the native mode driver might be more stable. There's no general answer and it depends on what camera you have. For the ZWO ASI120MM-Mini I would go with the native support, but the ASCOM driver is ok too.
HTH,
Andy
