New to PHD2.  Just bought an ASI120MM Mini for guiding.  Updated to the latest ASCOM platform (ASCOM platform 6.3) and downloaded the ASI Camera ASCOM Driver (ASICamera ASCOM Driver 1.0.3.22).  I then downloaded the ASICAP video capture to check functionally of the camera.  ASICAP and the camera worked well together.  I then downloaded PHD2 and for some reason when I fill out the Wizard is states it cannot detect the camera.  PHD2 connects to my mount just fine,  ASICAP is not on when I try PHD2.  Am I missing a particular driver?

Hi Kevin,
Your camera selection "ZWO ASI Camera" is for the native, non-ASCOM camera control method thus is not going through the ASCOM driver, and the version of PHD2 you have does not have native support for the ZWO ASI120MM Mini. Here are two solutions:
a) (recommended) update your PHD2 to the newer dev version here: https://openphdguiding.org/development-snapshots/ , or,
b) select the camera's ASCOM driver in PHD2 "ASI Camera (1) (ASCOM)" or "ASI Camera (2) (ASCOM)".

Andy,

I'm intrigued that you recommend updating to latest dev snapshot build for routine operation. I had been holding off on doing this because I thought these were for insider dev testing only and that I should wait for a full "point" version.  Is PHD2 2.6.6 imminent?

I've just bought the exact guide camera as the OP. I have always used the ZWO ASCOM drivers. Do you recommend using the native ZWO drivers for imaging as well, or is this recommendation specific to guiding with PHD2 and the 120MM Mini?

Thanks for your amazing work and dedication to our community!

Hi Scott,

I would not hesitate to use the dev series versions. Bruce and I both use them in our observatories. "insider dev testing" happens in isolation and that is not what the dev series builds are used for.  I understand how this can be confusing.  Our strategy is to have two types of releases:
major releases - for those who are reluctant to make any version updates (updated ~6 months or so)
dev releases - more frequent updates (4-8 weeks) that have the latest bug fixes, features, and hardware support
The dev releases are stable and suitable for use. Like any software, a bug can slip through our internal testing and work its way into a dev release. If that happens we fix it ASAP and put out a new dev release.  You can look at the the dev release history to see how often this has happened and make your own assessment.

Re: 2.6.6: there are a number of changes teed up for a 2.6.5dev7 release and a few more in the pipeline. We'll probably do a 2.6.6 release after 2.6.5dev7.

Re: native vs ASCOM camera drivers: either option is ok. All other factors being equal I tend to prefer native mode camera drivers as it eliminates an unnecessary software layer. In some cases the ASCOM driver is preferable because it provides additional capability or additional camera support. In other cases the native mode driver might be more stable. There's no general answer and it depends on what camera you have.  For the ZWO ASI120MM-Mini I would go with the native support, but the ASCOM driver is ok too.

HTH,
Andy

My PHD2 version is 2.6.9 and it still can't detect my ZWO ASI120mm Mini. The camera shows in my laptop's Device Manager but PHD2 says
no ZWO cameras detected when trying to connect.  Am I missing a step? My first attempt at connecting my equipment to PHD2 so please help, possibly with some
detailed info. No prior knowledge on my part should be assumed. Thank you, J.

Hi Janusz

have you installed the latest native zwo drivers first?

i also recommend you install the zwo ascom drivers, so you have more than one option to test.

Yes, it worked. Now PHD2 detects the camera. Thank you Brian.
