First, I'm using V2.6.7 - works fine for me and I follow the "if it ain't broke, don't fix rule."  And yes, I know, auto guidestar selection is best - sometimes.

I've had several situations lately where autoselection failed and when I tried to manually select a star, PhD wouldn't let me.  No obvious issues - the star had sufficient brightness, not saturated, etc.  I tried several different exposures, nothing worked.  Went to a different part of the sky, tried again, auto selection worked but manual still fails - consistently.

Any ideas?  Some setting I'm missing?  Been using PhD for years with few issues until now.

We can’t give you any advice on an old release like this.  If you decide to update and still need help, you will always need to upload both your guide and debug log files.

You should probably spend some time and review the updated manual on multi-star guiding, which is now the default.  Other important topics include Min-HFD and Saturation-by-ADU values.
