to Open Data Day
Dear Open Data Day community,

I hope you're all well.

I wanted to invite you to a series of meetings that we at OKFN are organising over the next few months, with a focus on our networks and communities. These are Open Sessions to jointly discuss key issues in the current open software and app development landscape – including ethical AI and AI literacy – based on the Open Data Editor (ODE) experience.

Many of you are already using or teaching ODE in various contexts, so I would love you to attend. There will be four meetings, one per month, starting next week. You will find below the text in which we announced the initiative, along with more details about the first session.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

We hope to see you soon!

Join the Community: Shaping ODE’s Future with AI & Open Sessions

open-sessions.jpg

We have reached a pivotal point in the Open Data Editor (ODE) project. Our simple, low-tech application, created to detect errors in tables and enhance data literacy across non-technical communities, is evolving into a key companion tool designed to support organisations in the early and critical stages of their AI journey. The next release will offer validation-focused AI assistance and trust-building features.

Beyond the Pilot Programme with organisations around the world – whose second cohort was recently announced – we are now establishing additional channels for engagement and dialogue with our communities, to further our commitment to quality data validation, offline performance optimisation, and ethical integration with AI workflows.

Today, we are announcing a series of four online meetings – ‘Open Sessions’ – to address key issues concerning the project’s present and future.

These will be open meetings moderated by the ODE team to reflect together with our communities on the issues that are affecting us. See below for the themes of each session and register for the first meeting.

This invitation is open to everyone in our networks and communities – School of Data, Open Data Day, Open Knowledge Network – as well as users of the app and those interested in finding out more.

Open Sessions #1
What Open Data Editor does and what it does not
Understanding what problems a software solves is just as important as knowing what its limits are. The focus of the first open session is to discuss the main features of the Open Data Editor with the community, such as detecting errors in tables, ensuring the application of FAIR principles and improving data quality. It will also clarify what the app doesn’t do, for example data visualisation or graphics. In this talk, we will compare ODE with similar tools and welcome suggestions for improvements, particularly with regard to the ethical AI integration we are currently working on, but without losing focus on ODE’s essence and what it solves.
