Dear all,

Here is the slide deck that I plan to use for the INCOSE Ontologies (& Knowledge Management) Working Group webinar tomorrow.  The conceptual model includes an inquiry into how knowledge domains come together in systems, and ideas on how we can modularize ontologies, link them to system models, and create bridges between knowledge domains in the context of particular systems.

Topic: Conceptual Model of Systems Engineering
Date: 23 Feb 2018
Time: 1315 CET.

We are looking for collaborators on an INCOSE project to refine these initial ideas.

Greatly disappointed to have a customer engagement 2/23, so will not be able to attend your session.
Interesting charts. Thanks.

Please say how these ideas can ensure the generation and operation of a sociotechnical system that accomplishes system engineering of a successful system of interest.
Can a successful SOI result from a sociotechnical system that does defective SE?
Is SE sufficient or only a ‘block’ in a system of Identification, Design/Architecting, Engineering, Activation (Production, Construction, Interoperation) and Learning (Fit For Purpose, Adaptation, and Value Measurement)?

Onward,
Jack Ring

Swami

I finally took a look at your slides, thanks for sharing

Looks like a lot of work has gone into the slides
 a few comments
(having done a PhD on this topic but not attended the talk so
only from looking quickly at the slides)

- it would be helpful to have references, even cursory, for the concepts mentioned in the slides
such as blocks. is this influenced by the blockchain movement? I never heard of blocks in conceptual modelling before blockchain radicalised engineers  -  we called them 'modules' in my days:-)

- would be useful to have clearer understanding of methodology and rationale. what approach was used in making the choices you presented, why?
(I could not see much of that at first glance)

- systems engineering is a process, right?
have the conceptual modelling approaches for process engineering been reviewed and used?

I cancelled my trip to Chennai, I ll get in touch when I do come your way=
I am available to collaborate on the research, via my consulting service, feel free to get in touch
if you need my input on this work

Best regards

PDM

Dear Paola,  and onto4se group,

Thank you for attending the talk.
  • Apologies for the lack of references.  Some references that discuss related ideas would be Duane Hybertson's work on "Model-Oriented Systems Engineering Science", and Mobus & Kalton's "Principles of Systems Science", as well as, for example, Gharajedaghi's work on "Systems Thinking: Managing Chaos and Complexity".  I did not specifically cite references because the work was more roughly based on typical ideas popular in the field (e.g. SEBoK) than on any specific set of ideas that we used as a starting point.  We are currently working with Duane, George Mobus and others, working through synergies between our ideas and thinking.
  • The "block" concept is taken from SysML, and is roughly the same as "module" or "component".  Nothing to do with blockchain.
  • The methodology and rationale was simply to see what foundational ideas were necessary to build a minimum understanding of how knowledge from multiple domains come together in a system.  We discovered that if we look at different knowledge domains and how they relate to each other, the distinction between knowledge about wholes and knowledge about aspects is the most useful one for explaining how they fit with each other.  So our choice of concepts was driven by the questions we asked and wanted to answer.
  • Yes, systems engineering is a process.  The conceptual framework presented can indeed be used to model this process and reason about it, and some of the slides towards the end, labelled "preliminary verification" present the results of our attempts to map the standard systems engineering process to the theory.

I hope the overall positioning of the work is clear.  We are trying to inquire into the fundamental nature of systems, and particularly the relationships between systems and knowledge domains. We have arrived at simple conclusions:
  1. Systems consist of interacting wholes.  There is knowledge about wholes, that includes knowledge about how wholes fit with each other (in terms of roles, with associated role profiles).
  2. Each whole has multiple aspects.  Properties that we are interested in belong to aspects.  We reason about these properties by projecting from the wholes to these aspects (producing views), and then using aspect domain knowledge to reason about how the properties of interest arise from the interacting wholes.
  3. There is also knowledge that is common to all systems, including knowledge about concurrency, variety, dynamics of networks of processes etc. Reasoning also requires the application of this knowledge, to make sure that the system behaves as we intend.
Together, the above line of thinking provides us with guidance for how to represent knowledge related to systems, how to bring such structured knowledge together in system modelling, and the collection of reasoning problems involved in systems engineering.

We are currently working through the relationship of these ideas to (a) systems science (b) SysML modelling and (c) knowledge representation using ontologies.  We would welcome help from you and others in the group with (c), since we have limited background in structured knowledge representation and use.

Paola, I would be very happy to discuss and see if we can collaborate, particularly on developing an ontological model for systems engineering (which I think is one of your interests).  Please let me know a convenient time, and I can call you to take this further.

Thanks, and warm regards,
swami

thanks a lot for the detailed reply
Yes, it would be useful to have references since they really help
to frame the context and understand the perspective you are coming from

I am on the move for 3 weeks and will be in touch soon after that

The block is not from  blockchain puts me at ease :-)

Thank you very much again for gathering this materials
