Dear Sir,
Great is my pleasure to have been able to join this platform. I exported data in spss format using ONA. Two separate data sets were created. The first was automatically named repeat, that contains data for repeated questions, while the second had only data for single questions. I'd like to know how I can merge these two data sets in order to perform some analysis.

Regards.

Dove.

NB.The 2 spss data sets are attached (.sav).

Hello Dove,

Kindly note that your data comes in different sheets when you select Excel or SAV as your export format. The number of sheets is equivalent to the number of repeat groups in your form.

To merge the different sheets, we would recommend that you use the parent_index column and match it with the  _index column in Sheet1 (parent data). Then, you can use index match (Vlookup) to match all the pulled parent data to the other sheets using the _index as the unique ID.

An alternative would be to export the data as CSV. All the data is exported in one worksheet with each column following the order of the questionnaire.

Please let us know if you have further questions.

Regards,
Megan

Hi Megan,
I managed to merge the 2 spss data sets by renaming the parent_index into _index . The next issue here is that values for the different cases appear once and I'm oblige to copy and paste in order to fill the missing values. if this could be done automatically in spss, it will be time saving. Any advice?

Best wishes for 2020.

Dove.

NB. My choice for using spss is to keep the value labels and value sets for each of the questions.

Hello Dove,

Glad to hear you were able to resolve your issue! However, the way the data is formatted in the repeat group is a row for each repeat group of questions answered. This means if one record had more than one repeat group of questions, this type of merge would be one record merged to many records resulting in multiple rows per record.

Unfortunately, there is not a way to change how the data is exported in the repeat group sheet. The only alternative is to export as a CSV, but this will not include the value labels and value sets as you indicated you would like. I don't think there is simple way to do this. I would recommend checking the SPSS support forums: https://developer.ibm.com/predictiveanalytics/forums/

Megan
