Patty Pagaling and Joanie Chiarodit of Ojai’s Transition to Organics let me know yesterday that a new, extensive, application area for neo-nicotinoid pesticide application has been named within Ojai. The notification area reaches from Matilija Street in the south to Fairview in the north and from Foothill to west and Canada to the east. A map is attached with a green boundary of the notification area and, within that, a red boundary of the spray area within it.

Residences within the red boundary have the option of “opting out” if they immediately call 800-491-1899 .

An excellent article by Joanie is also attached which details this “opt out” program, as well as the dangers to bees, butterflies, birds, and soil organisms of this spray program. She also highlights research into the persistent residues of a similar state spray program in Summerland and the community opposition by residents to these applications in Santa Barbara. Please take the time to read this insightful article.

I hope to see everyone at the bee club meeting next Thursday, 6:00 PM, at The Farmer and the Cook.

Thanks Glenn, great info to pass on. I want to add that notifications only went out to homeowners in the area, not renters or gardeners or kids or dogs or bees or hummingbirds--- so contact your friends who live in the area and let them know CDFA will be spraying unless you call to "opt out". Also, the spraying will start on Monday, July 7! Don't eat your fruit from any citrus in the area, and try to protect your bees.
