Ted King pulls the Tour of California Peloton in 2013 on Stage 8 up Highway 1
Oceanside Century
Saturday, April 23, 7:30 A.M.
105 Miles with 4,400 Feet of Climbing
How about a nice and easy Oceanside Century on Saturday?
Weather.com at Lake Forest at http://www.weather.com/weather/tenday/l/USCA0581:1:US is forecasting 54 – 72 with Mostly Sun on Saturday so it should be a great day for a ride down to Oceanside.
In order to ride through Camp Pendleton Marine Corp. Base, you’ll need a DBIDS Recreational Bicyclist pass/credential which is explained at
https://www.pendleton.marines.mil/Base-Access/Recreational-Bicycling/
Note that if you have an old California Driver’s License marked “Not Valid for Federal Purposes”, they will not issue you a pass. You need a new California Driver’s License called a REAL ID as shown at https://realid.dmv.ca.gov/
If you don’t have one, you can follow this route down to Las Pulgas then turn around and still have a good 88 mile ride.
Let me know if you are coming to this century by replying to this e-mail. If there isn't enough interest in this ride, I may cancel it by announcing the cancellation on this e-mail list on Friday.
The Route Slip for the Oceanside Century for this coming Saturday is at
http://www.caltriplecrown.com/centuries/OceansideCentury.xls
and printed copies will be available at the start of the ride.
My Strava Report from 9/10/16 on this route is at https://www.strava.com/activities/707691105
This route has one official distance of 105 miles. It is an out and back course so it can be cut short if necessary by turning around at the first Water Stop at mile 33 for example turning it into about 66 miles. Or you name it ... you can turn around whenever you need so come join us whether you want to ride 25, 50, 75, or 100 miles ... or anything in between.
The route sheet reflects the following changes:
- Uses the bike route through San Clemente instead of PCH. This is a good idea since it avoids all of the traffic on PCH.
- First Water Stop is the Carl’s Jr. at the end of town in San Clemente which is a good idea since Carl’s has good Ice, Water and Restrooms.
- The lunch stop is the new(er) McDonalds near the big PX complex just before the main guard gate in Oceanside.
This ride will start at “The Square” (formerly Foodpark) in Irvine at Main and MacArthur at 7:30 A.M. sharp so you should arrive by 7:15 A.M. Main and MacArthur is near the intersection of the San Diego Freeway (405) and the Newport (55) Freeway. Take the MacArthur Blvd. exit from the San Diego (405) Freeway and turn North ... Main Street is the first street Northeast of the 405 Freeway. Meet in the Parking Lot behind the Starbucks.
Ride safe,
Chuck Bramwell
Chuck,
Count me in. I will only be going to Las Pulgas because I have not renewed my base pass this year.
I have added this event to the OCW website and Strava OCW Group page and I have a link to the RidewithGPS map file where you can download the GPS/TCX file for the route.
See you on Saturday
Larry Locken
