Happy Holidays Everyone:

Congratulations - Great Progress to Date

Over the second half of 2020, you collectively identified multiple functional roles at your institutions that work with OA eBook usage data, and noted the specific activities each undertakes that relies on usage data. Your asynchronous contributions were grouped and discussed in our meetings in October. *Finally* I've been able to go back through the 10 boards we've generated to pull all of the information into a single document that describes how this diverse group of book aggregators, discovery platforms, publishing platforms and other publishing services work with book usage data.

What's Next

Over 2021, the OA eBook Usage data trust project aims to understand how a data trust can impact usage data activities to ultimately achieve economies of scale across the usage data supply chain, reduce the duplication of effort, and (hopefully) make your lives easier. To prepare for that community conversation, I'd like to make sure we have captured a good general description of your activities as publishing platforms and services.

  • By January 15thplease comment, edit, and add additional ideas directly to the Book Publishing Platform/Service OA eBook Usage Data Use-Case Details document:  https://docs.google.com/document/d/1eg4ukmy2ZtV8xERAkCZW0nnNXT4-uP8BoSzepUJqJKI/edit?usp=sharing

  • Please consider whether we need to fork this document into individual use-cases for Aggregators, Discovery platforms, Publishing platforms, etc.. If you find that you want to add details to the document for your type of platform/service, please annotate your comment so we know whether the activity is common to all, or specific to your type of platform/service.

  • Note that this process is being replicated with other groups of stakeholders. University presses have already shared their use case overview and details for public comment. Commercial and library publishers are at the beginning stages of ideation, and workshops are being planned for libraries, authors, and society publishers in 2021. Once all use cases have been developed and shared for public comment, we expect to publish the set for community use.

To assist with version control,  the virtual GroupMap white boards will be locked to ensure that future contributions are made within the google doc.

Thank you for all of your contributions over the course of this year. I hope this document does them justice! Our revisions over the next month will move us toward sharing a public version of this document for comment mid-January.

Best regards for a Happy New Year!

Christina

All: I have fixed the permission on the use-case document in Google Docs, so you should now be able to add comments.  --Kevin

Greetings All:

I hope your year is off to a good start.

As a reminder, through January 15th we are seeking comments and edits from this group on the Book Publishing Platform/Service OA eBook Usage Data Use-Case Details document. This google document summarizes the multiple virtual whiteboards we worked on over the past year. Once our comment period ends on January 15th, we will seek broader public comment from other publishing platforms and services.

I look forward to seeing your tracked changes and comments.

Best regards,
Christina

Dear Christina

I have made a few comments. Would it be possible for me to ask our Technical Advisory Group to comment on this version, or would you prefer we wait until you seek the broader public comment?

Kind regards

Lorraine

Lorraine - it'd be great if you'd be willing to share this with the TAG. Thank you for offering.

I wanted to allow this group to have a chance to review and comment amongst themselves first, so my gut is to wait until January 16th for broader comment from outside this group.
