Launching a NYC Linguistic Anthropology Laboratory / "Ling Lab"

Dear Linguistic Anthropology Community,
Inspired by a model that has been successful at institutions like the University of Michigan, we are excited to propose the creation of a Linguistic Anthropology Laboratory or "Ling Lab" here in New York City.
A Ling Lab is a social space that brings together linguistic anthropologists at all points in their careers. It’s a space dedicated to the collective improvement of our research in a collaborative, low-stakes environment.
The idea is to create regular, informal meetings where we can:
Discuss linguistic anthropological and semiotic theories + methodologies.
Workshop pre-circulated drafts, chapter excerpts, or article manuscripts.
Host data sessions to collaboratively analyze field recordings, transcripts, or other materials.
Provide a friendly audience to practice job talks, conference panel presentations, or grant pitches.
The goal is not to add another high-pressure obligation, but to build a supportive network. We envision this as a cross-institutional hub for linguistic anthropologists in NYC, from those just starting coursework to senior scholars in the field who are interested in building a regular, informal gathering space.
Linguistic anthropology can be challenging. A NYC Ling Lab could help create a space grounded in commitments to responsible and reflexive research for a refinement of our questions, analyses, and presentation skills.
