APRSdroid works great on the Amazon FireTV. I just got a 55” Amazon Omni FireTV and of course one of the first things I had to try out was APRSdroid on it. It works beautifully. Of course just using APRSIS is straight forward, but I was also able to connect to my KISS TNC (a RPi running DireWolf connected to a Yaesu 8900R) by simply just appending the IP address with ”:8001” (substitute whatever port your KISS TNC is on). It also has the option of using a Bluetooth SPP connection, but I didn’t try that out as my MobilinkD TNC3 is out of range and I suspect the Amazon FireTV doesn’t support serial-over-Bluetooth anyway, but I’ll test that out tomorrow.
One caveat: you obviously have to use a manual position as the FireTV doesn’t have a GPS (why would it). When you open the box to enter the Lat and Long, it only gives you the option to enter 0-9 numbers as they forgot to include the “.” and “-“ characters, which are obviously necessary. No biggie, just use the FireTV remote app on your smartphone and it lets you use a full keyboard to input text. Another hint, when you are on the full map screen and want to get back to the menu options at the top of the screen, just press the “play/pause”button on your remote. Great app. It can be used for APRS messaging also. Good for #APRSthursday 🙂
As for the FireTV itself, it has some minor quirks that should get resolved with future firmware updates, but overall I’m pretty happy with it. The price was good for a 55” smart TV and I’m already embedded in both Amazon’s and Apple’s ecosystems. It supports Apple Airplay and there is also an Apple TV app for it. I have an Apple TV 4K 64GB box anyway, but having the app also is convenient.
