I have a whole summary Google sheet of data for each of our room hirers at my church which I would like to email as the first page of a longer document. Is it possible to merge a whole sheet into a document. Is there a work around anybody has used - eg turning the sheet into an image? I can use a google script to email the sheet and the rest of the document but I would like to merge them into one document.

Interesting question.  I have found that if you copy the rows and columns you want in your template and paste that into the document, you will be asked if you want that to be a linked sheet or just a simple paste.

With a linked table you can click on the table and choose update to refresh the data.

I suggest you do a simple test to make sure the table is the way you want it in the output.

Many thanks Joe for that insight. Assuming my template in google docs is A and table in google sheets is B I find that:

if I change the data on B and then update the linked A, A loses formatting (many of the rows on B have merged cells)
if I change the data on B with and then run autocrat I can not find a way to get the subsequently merged document to have the updated B data

I think what I am wanting to do is not possible. But it would be a step forward if I could find a way to stop A loosing the formatting?

Sorry should have added the "Match spreadsheet data and formatting" option on the template A is greyed out.

Roger,

I'm wondering if Autocrat is the tool you are looking for?  You can publish a sheet or include it on a page on a Google Site.  Either way, the most recent information is available.  Well, a published document is only updated every five minutes.

To get around the formatting issue you can use the Text function to format the data the way you want it displayed.

A PDF will not be updated.  You can include a link to the data in the PDF and the link would point to the most recent data.

The latest version of Google sites is not that hard to learn.

Thanks Joe - yes you are right. I will have to do it another way and write a simple script. It can not be done with autocrat. Got the link into the template working OK though. The problem was my formatting of the spreadsheet. Thanks for your help
