Good Morning,

We previously used an open source product called Clone Deploy.  Now that the main support admin has left the district, we are looking for an easy an out-of-box Windows solution.  Any suggestions?

Thanks.

EaseUS has some products I use. I have not expressly used their image mover. I happen to choose Samsung SSDs and use their included free clone software they provide for SSD upgrades

Macrium Reflect can do this within windows without issues as well. They allow some commercial usage of their free product which does provide the clone feature

Acronis True Image also has a clone feature that can be built on Linux or WinPE but clones happen outside of windows from boot media

Are you cloning for hard drive replacement or for system deployment?

There’s a variety of tools for both, but if for system deployment, Microsoft’s solutions are easy to use (IMO) and free (as in included with Windows Server or downloadable).

Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT)

Windows Deployment Services (WDS)

And there is a HUGE amount of documentation on the subject.

FOG is worth a look, it used to be very popular when I was in the EDU space. I have not looked at it in a few years though.

I've done some testing with SmartDeply and it was very easy to set up, priced reasonably, and their support was pretty good. I've set up SCCM, Intune AutoPilot, MDT/WDS, and SmartDeploy was much easier to set up than any of the native Microsoft solutions.

Regards,
Tony

fyi, if this is the same 'CloneDeploy' that I think you are referring to - it became 'Theopenem' (The Open Endpoint Manager) back in 2019.  You might want to check out how the project has evolved:

Lee, Ideally system deployment.  With the IT staff cuts around here, nobody has the time or the expertise to get OSD up and running reliably.  We need a ready to go, out of the box solution, that can be used by the not so technically inclined.

If your machines are part of a domain, cloning as system deployment is a bad idea. I can't speak to cloning for workgroups, but I can't imagine there aren't issues there too.

Although systems may appear "cloned" to the average user, there is a lot more going on underneath that simply requires a little bit of "expertise", **especially in a domain environment**. Asking not-so-technically inclined folks to deploy Windows is like asking a new driver to make downtown deliveries in a semi-truck -- technically possible, but fraught with potential issues.

That's at least partly why have reasonably(-ish) paid jobs. ☺
