I know this topic has been discussed numerous times over the years, but as server OSes advance, there is always hope that management of this folder has gotten better.

I have a Server 2016 box in my environment, that has a 100GB system drive.  Out of that 100GB, 60+GB is in the WinSxS folder.  Is there any “safe” method of cleaning this up?  I’ve been looking at the DISM method, but have seen notes that there is a risk of data loss using this method, which, of course, makes me a little nervous.  Does anyone have something they do on a regular basis, to try and manage the size of this folder?

Thanks,

Are you refering to "Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase"?

Never encountered data loss. The only loss I can see is the ability to uninstall the current CU or the one before and so on.
Actually in our case after using the /ResetBase switch some machines finally did the feature upgrade.

Other than that no tools known to us.

All in all the mantra is reinstall on a regular basis

Did running the command recover any drive space?
