Hello everyone,

During the analysis of Wi-Fi 6 uplink scenarios, we observed previously undescribed behavior that we would like to discuss in more detail.

Setup:
A Wi-Fi 6 STA transmits UDP uplink packets with a packet interval of 10 ms and a packet size of 20 bytes to the AP. This is a pure EDCA scenario without multi-user transmissions, frame aggregation, or competing traffic.

Observation:
Using the current ns-3 version (ns-3.46), cyclical interruptions occur during the uplink transmission. Specifically, there are periods of approximately 2 seconds during which no uplink transmissions are received at the AP, followed by about 3 seconds of normal operation.
Notably, during the periods without received uplink packets, the STA continues to initiate transmissions, and the AP still receives LLC frames from the STA.

After reverting to ns-3.44, this behavior was no longer observed, and the uplink transmissions proceeded as expected according to the standard.

We would greatly appreciate any insights or explanations regarding this behavior.

Best regards,
Hannes

Hannes, thank you for reporting this.  Do you happen to have a test program that exhibits the behavior that you could share?

Hello Mr. Henderson,

thank you for responding.

we are currently working on a research project and, for that reason, we are unable to publish the complete project.
Our network is based on an extension of the wifi-he-network example.
We have configured it in a similar way and executed it using the following parameters:

./ns3 run wifi-he-network --command-template "%s --mcs=11 --guardInterval=800 --channelWidth=80 --dlAckType=MU-BAR --nStations=1 --downlink=false --enableBsrp=false --simulationTime=10"

We observed the same behavior in the analyse of the PCAPS as described.

If you need further images or pcaps please let me know.

Best regards

Hannes

Thanks for suggesting a program to reproduce; I entered an issue to work on resolving this:  https://gitlab.com/nsnam/ns-3-dev/-/issues/1267
