Is installing the ns-2 possible for M1 mac? It has a ARM architecture, but the software requires x86_64 architecture. I read somewhere ns-3 can be installed in M1 Mac. But is ns-2 possible? I want it for a Lab course. I tried the steps required for installing it using some old blogs but found no success. Can someone help with this?

I was able to build ns-2 on an M1 Mac today. It required a number of
small patches and workarounds that I haven't written down coherently
yet; I will try to do so this weekend.

Thank you in advance🙏. I had a lab on Monday, didn't think I had a chance to install it until your reply.

Just came to know about a virtualization solution called UTM which is a full-featured system emulator and virtual machine host for iOS and macOS.
https://mac.getutm.app/

If it will really work on M1/M2 machines, then it will be easy for you to install an old Linux variant (with a suitable version of gcc and other dependencies) and install any version on ns-2 on it.

You may try this and post your results here so that it will be useful for people who are using M1/M2 machines for installing ns-2/ns-3.

Sorry. Probably, the performance of UTM will not be good on M1 and M2. (It will only work well on Intel-based CPUs).

Anyway, if someone tried UTM on M1 or M2, then kindly share their experience here.

Tom was able to create a guide for its installation. I worked on my M1 Mac.
