Hi nwma admins,

I think we can set up the mailing list to allow only approved messages to be sent to the group. With the amount of traffic we get, this shouldn't be too much of an admin overhead and would prevent all of this type of spam. If you would like, I'm happy to help set that up. let me know.

Thanks,

Daniel Ranallo

Tempting - I (one of the admins) hate the spam! There are some trade-offs though:

  • we've got a team of admins, so the overhead isn't too much "hours of labor" when divided by the relatively low traffic - true
  • BUT - we don't have a duty rotation and it isn't reasonable to manage one - so the amount of time between you hitting send an an admin approving it might be a bit much. Particularly since some of us are "fairly offline" sailing for days/weeks at a time.
  • Google itself adds a variable and unknown lead time to the admin notifications about pending messages. Sometimes this can be days! Unfortunately, this bites us even though we have it set to allow messages directly through for members and it has caused problems - for example someone trying to arrange some mutual aid or talk about a race upcoming "in a few days" and their message gets held for moderation. Google does not provide a reason why valid, long-time members messages get held for moderation erratically.
  • We seem to be under a particularly heavy bot assault at the moment - I just blocked two more subscription requests(!), one of them asserting they are a "member of the NWMA HOA". I honestly don't understand why Google isn't more able to detect that @gmail.com addresses are bots but here we are. These things come and go though so I think it will get better.
  • People are required to provide a reason why they are joining. "HOA membership" aside, these reasons have been "pretty good" lately and that led me to approve more than one that I shouldn't have.  I've seen some subscriptions (FB Groups, email lists etc) have some success with this - provide a question that it is harder for a bot to answer correctly. I will look into it.
