Hi all-  we had a lovely day racing around the rock saturday, with more wind than forecast.  10-14, tailing off to not much at the end of the race.  Bill Q was out there too on Tatiana, sailing with vice commodore Jeff O, and Dan Hill.  They were sailing annoyingly high and fast off the start, but Freda Mae gradually pulled ahead.  We made no significant boat handling errors, but lost the plot right at the end, heading out into the tidal current on the leg from meadow point to the finish.  We were thinking clear air, but the better move was probably to stay on shore for current relief.

Tomorrow is the first day of the Ballard Cup.  Week day evening racing is what makes summer extra delightful in the PNW.

Fun fact: asym is quite slow when the tack is at the end of the pole (backwards). You just can't point high enough to get good VMG.
Not sure whose fault it was, but there WILL be keel-haulings.

I’m pretty sure that one is on me.
Maybe my one mulligan for my first time out this season.  I should have figured it out earlier… the loft curl was not behaving normally.

Mmm.  I always set the asym tack at the end of the pole...   Me thinks this is psychological warfare, trying to get me to set the clew forwards🙂

I do have my Narwal/english translator switched on… or maybe you had to be there.

Is the sail marked “tack” and “clew”?  If not, then you get a pass, at least according to me. If so… well, it’s all just for fun anyway.

In my defense (again), I was handed what looked like a single line (presumably a tack).  Apparently it was the clew end of a long sheet bridle... not the tack line.
😇

No animals were harmed in this experiment... no tax money was expended... and interestingly enough, the regular crew did not seem to demand any penalty beer afterwards.  In fact, they fed me.  Weird.

Vince:
I applaud your efforts at “mistake-proofing” spinnaker-raising. I have experience with this at Children’s Hospital. (Mistake-proofing, not spinnaker-raising.) It’s difficult making something foolproof. Like, when I saw the label on the sail, I immediately pictured a cold beer being briskly poured into a frozen mug.
Not that much of a distraction…
See you Friday?
