For any of you out there that like to drive out to Orient Point, County Parks has started enforcing the outer beach permit requirement so beware.

No, town sticker is only good on town property.  You need green key for OP and outer beach if you want to drive out there.  Earlier I was told green key would be enough but as of yesterday definitely not the case.

And just how does one obtain an 'Outer Beach Permit'..?
I would assume you'd apply at a county facility such as Indian Island, but are there any special requirements specific to 4x4s or can any vehicle qualify for the permit, and is the permit just for Orient Point, or is it good for all Suffolk beaches?  And how much is the county charging for the privilege of navigating the tank-trap potholes out to the Point? 
Lastly, how did the county decide Orient Point is an 'outer beach'? And whose decision was this after all these years? Just sayin....

About Outer Beach Access

Several of our parks offer outer beach (shoreline) access opportunities to off-road vehicles (ORV's). A Suffolk County Parks Recreational Vehicle Use permit is required to enjoy these locations. Suffolk County Park Outer Beach 4x4 permits may be purchased year round at West Sayville, Blydenburgh, Cathedral Pines, Cedar Point, Indian Island, Sears Bellows, Smith Point, West Hills and online HERE. In Season they are also available at Montauk, Cupsogue and Shinnecock East park offices. The Outer Beach 4x4 permit includes access to designated beach areas for access as well as night fishing in designated parks. Be advised that areas on the outer beach may be closed due to beach conditions, maintenance or bird nesting. Please check the Suffolk County Parks Facebook/Twitter page or call the park of your choice to get up-to-date outer beach access information.

How to purchase the Outer Beach Permit:

  • You will need your Green Key Card
  • Your Registration
  • Your Driver’s License
  • If you do not have a Green Key you can purchase one at the same time.
  • If you have a discounted Green Key you can only purchase one discounted Outer Beach Permit
