Game 145: From Beyond: Part II - Mission Debrief

Ioto Galactic Enterprises North Bay KF Drive Assembly Site, 06:55 local time

As the battle rages on, the pull of the wormhole gets stronger and stronger.  Those of you with working leg actuators and motive systems are forced to watch in horror as Ulrike Fishert and "Nihilist" Bob’s immobilized vehicles drift closer and closer to their doom.  Then, just as they reach the edge of the abyss, a signal flare shoots up from the top of one of the massive construction cranes positioned around the assembly site, quickly followed by matching flares from the second and third cranes.   Then, three massive glyphs, one emblazoned on each crane, shine a vivid blue-white.  A wall of blue-white light bursts forth from each glyph, and together they form a triangular prism around the wormhole with the cranes as their vertices.  The wormhole remains, but its grip upon you has been lost.  The Black Marauder snaps its torso to the right then back to the left as though looking for the source of this new development, but before it can start to move, the wormhole takes on the same blue-white hue and starts to drag the Black Marauder towards it.  The Black Marauder struggles against the pull of the wormhole, but it is to no avail as it disappears into the orb of light.  The brightness of the wormhole increases tenfold, forcing you to look away or cover your eyes.  Then it collapses with a snap that rattles you to your bones.  The mechs dominated by the Black Marauder drop lifelessly to the ground.  Then…silence.  The sun breaks over the horizon to your east as Dr. Romero’s roaring laughter disrupts the momentary peace.

“Ah ha ha ha ha!  It worked!  Total particle charge reversal and quantum detanglement!  Beautiful!” he says over comms.

“Dr. Romero, what did you do?  Where is the Black Marauder?” Miss Black asks.

“Simply put, Stygian, I redirected all the energy from the wormhole back at the Black Marauder,” Dr. Romero replies with audible pride.  “Regrettably…I have no idea where that sent it,” he finishes in a more sheepish tone.

“I see…well, as far as we’re concerned the job is done if the Black Marauder has been removed.  I’m getting debriefing orders from the Lyran First; I’m sending coordinates now.  I’m directing Dotted Line to land nearby.  I’ll meet you there.”

After a lengthy debrief with command elements of the Lyran First Regulars, you return to Dotted Line with Miss Black and Dr. Romero.  When you enter the primary briefing room for your own internal debrief, you are surprised to find an old man sitting inside waiting for you there.  His white button-down shirt, brown trousers, suspenders, and shoes all appear to be as old as he is.  An equally worn tan jacket is neatly laid across a nearby chair and a forearm crutch rests against it.  His blue eyes, hiding behind pince-nez glasses, size you up as you enter, and a slight smile forms on his face, though it is difficult to see behind his long grey beard and mustache.  He speaks with a very slight Slavic accent.

“Welcome back.  I hope you don’t mind I made myself comfortable while I waited for you.  That Colonel Jaeger can be very thorough in his questioning and my legs aren’t what they used to be.”

Miss Black’s stony facade flips on as she calmly asks the man, “Who are you?  And how did you get in here?”

“Ah yes,” he says, “it’s quite rude of me not to introduce myself.  You can call me Dr. Maroon.  I came here to discuss some of the recent events happening here on Alarion with you.  Please, you and your men come in out of the corridor so we can talk.”

Miss Black pauses for a moment before motioning all of you to get inside.  Once everyone is assembled, Dr. Maroon moves to a chair at the front of the room facing all of you and addresses you.

“I represent certain parties with an interest in unusual events such as those you have witnessed in the last 24 hours.  They have sent me here to warn you.  The things you have seen are not to be made known to the public under any circumstances, especially those of an…otherworldly nature.  Good things will happen to those wise enough to heed this warning,” Dr. Maroon says with a grin.

“And to the unwise?” Miss Black asks.

“Your friends Rohrkabel and Bote seemed to think they knew better than to heed this warning…and are now in the hands of the Lyran Intelligence Corps.  I should note though, that the LIC did not find the orbital platform that Rohrkabel created, so its contents are now free for the taking,” Dr. Maroon replies.

“Are you trying to buy our silence, Dr. Maroon?” Everett Thames inquires.

“I’m merely answering Colonel Veloso’s question, XO Thames,” Dr. Maroon responds.

“While you consider this, there is one other matter I came here for,” Dr. Maroon declares as he turns to face Dr. Romero.  “Dr. Romero, I would like you to come with me, please.”

Dr. Romero glances nervously at Miss Black and XO Thames. “I don’t think I want to do that, Dr. Maroon,” he answers.

“I am afraid I must insist,” Dr. Maroon implores, “There are many people eager to know more about the work you’ve done here.  If it’s any consolation, I am very confident they would be willing to fund a great deal of additional research.”

Dr. Romero sits deep in thought for a moment before saying, “Very well, Dr. Maroon.  Lead on.”

“There’s a good man,” Dr. Maroon says with a grin as he gets up from his chair and dons his jacket and forearm crutch.

“Colonel Veloso, XO Thames, I trust you will choose your next actions wisely.”

He slowly shuffles out of the room with Dr. Romero at his side.

Special Turn Actions (READ CAREFULLY)

Each player may perform one of the two following actions:

• Claim one mech or vehicle from the Black Market at no cost

• Claim an additional 200WP

If you choose to claim a mech or vehicle from the Black Market and are not in command, the selected unit will replace an existing unit of the same kind as the unit you select with no rideswap charges.  If you are not in command and have an open space in your current lances, the selected unit takes that space if able.

This action is performed at the beginning of your management turn before any other actions.

I am not in command, so claiming a mech/vehicle from the Black Market looks like a better deal than WP I won't really be able to spend on purchases for the time being.

With that considered, trading my Wasp for the Wolverine on the Black Market seems like the best option, leaving the Grand Titan for someone with better gunnery than a 4/5 pilot.

I'm fairly certain I'm calculating Repair & Rearm costs incorrectly. I remember the spreadsheet auto-calculating it before, but it currently has "Repair Cost" listed as 0 and the values in the "Cost" column under "Damage and Consumables" don't match my understanding of the rules. (e.g. the Griffin's repair cost is 1 when there is armor damage that should cost 5?)

If I take the sum of the "Cost" column (assuming it's correct), I get 134 WP. Cell X16 lists my WP at 354, so I should be able to afford full repairs?

I may need some help with figuring out the actual cost, but I would like to repair as many units as I can afford.

No, this is meant to be a one-time boon to improve AA's tech base, so there's no selling off of the swapped out units.

2. Can he add an additional lance to put the titan in?

No, if you are not in command then you must follow all other rules regarding allowed management turn actions for out-of-command mercenary companies.

3. His unit that he has sold/ replaced will that go into the black market for others if they want it?

No, the units being swapped out are effectively being banished to the shadow realm as part of this one-time boon.

You would need to spend some additional WP to cover retraining costs for your commander and Trinity Vesper if you want to swap their rides.

The cost involved would be 120WP (base 20 + 40 for moving Trinity Vesper from an assault to a medium, and base 20 + 40 for moving Andrew Kaspyzyk from a medium to an assault).

Let me know if you want to amend your turn in light of this new information.  You can find the full rules for this in the rules doc under 'Retraining'.
