does the name stand for something? - dgram

dgram is short for datagram, as in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Datagram_socket

"Datagram", which comes out of the BSD socket terminology for dealing with networks.

Datagrams are known-size messages, delivered whole or not at all -- it's the D in UDP -- rather than a streaming protocol like TCP.
