Nodejs installed withouth npm?

Hi,

I've just installed nodejs on Debian 7 - by apt-get install nodejs.

Nodejs seems to be working fine, but when I enter npm I get "command not found".

"which nodejs" points to "usr/bin" and there it is - nodejs, but there is no npm file, what went wrong?

Consider using the nodesource repo, since it's up to date and includes npm, not broken into a ton of packages and out of date like debian.

The oneliner:

curl https://deb.nodesource.com/setup | sudo sh

You can do what that does manually if you want to verify rather than trusting the script, but that's the gist of it -- adds a file in /etc/yum* stuff, more or less.

Hi there,

Nothing went wrong, Debian nodejs packs only nodejs, not the surrounding bits.
To install npm you need only to:
 # apt-get install npm

You can directly download the binary executable file from http://nodejs.org/dist/ .

• Check the stable version from http://nodejs.org/dist/npm-versions.txt or just get the latest version from http://nodejs.org/dist/latest/
• Download the nodejs binary file for your OS. (e.g. node-v0.10.35-linux-x86.tar.gz  => Linux x86 )
• Extract the files and add these files to your $PATH

BTW:

You also can directly install NPM from http://nodejs.org/dist/npm/
