I have just installed Node-red v0.16.2
I have an inject node connect to email out node and I keep getting the "Error: Greeting never received".
I am using the smtp.gmail.com port 465
I do not think it is my credential problem as I am getting the same error using the correct and wrong password.
Is there something i am not doing correct? Any suggestion?

What platform are you running on? Does it have a local firewall and is 465 traffic allowed out?

I did that in Window VM. I disabled the firewall and virus, same thing.
I also tried that out in bluemix, same error.

it works with my hotmail but not with my gmail. So I will stick with using hotmail.

I wonder, do you have two-factor authentication turned on? If so, you probably need to create an application password and use that instead.

BTW, if you are not using 2FA for both Google and Hotmail, I strongly recommend it.

An update to the Email node was made 5 days ago that was supposed to address this.
Can you confirm which version of the node you are using?

Oh dear -  I am using 0.1.18 -  and I came in here to put a post up to say my email does not work.... until I found this.

Right now -  I have two up to date node-red installations..

In the UK one my gmail continues to work - I've just remoted into Node-Red and tested it. It is running 0.1.15 email - which has no security tick box.

Here in Spain my gmail no longer works - same account - same settings - that is running 0.1.18 email. That DOES have a security box.

Both have worked for many months, sending status emails to me every morning.

So as far as I can see here - the only difference is the NON-working one is 0.1.18

Pete.

good luck

I had that issue with v0.1.18, reinstalling v0.1.15 fixed it.
Version 0.1.19 is out now and I no longer get that error message with it, just need to make sure the box is ticked for SSL ports.

As it's a default / core node you'll probably need
sudo npm i -g --unsafe-perm node-red-node-email

ahhhh. actually  you need
(eg on Pi)

cd /usr/lib/node_modules/node-red/node_modules
sudo npm i --unsafe-perm node-red-...@0.1.20

This worked – then I read your next email… no idea what version I have now.

Apparently one needs to use and app password for node-red to send emails to google mail see here: Option 2. At your own risk!
Option 1: Upgrade to a more secure app that uses the most up to date security measures. All Google products, like Gmail, use the latest security measures.
  • Option 2: Change your settings to allow less secure apps to access your account. We don't recommend this option because it might make it easier for someone to break into your account. If you want to allow access anyway, follow these steps:
    1. Go to the "Less secure apps" section in My Account.
    2. Next to "Access for less secure apps," select Turn on. (Note to G Suite users: This setting is hidden if your administrator has locked less secure app account access.)

If you still can't sign in to your account, the "password incorrect" error might be caused by a different reason.
