Are there any code-generating AIs available for free? Perhaps a trial
version? I would like to experiment with this, but am retired and on a
small fixed income. I am not currently planning to develop a commercial
product, but would merely like to become more familiar with the technology.

For some simple coding I have used grok an Gemini at various times.  Gemini in the chrome browser, ang grok either in their app or via X (yes, I'm on their $8/mo plan).  Writing Python mainly.

You can run LM Studio locally. The larger models require beefier hardware, but you run smaller models on weaker machines. There's plenty there to experiment with for free. Gemma is Gemini andd gpt-oss is chat-gpt so they are good ones to get you started.
