Google SMTP auth failure

I have a Python script that sends a newsletter once a day, it has worked well until about a week ago.  My friend Google has apparently changed something; now I get a 535 error, 5.7.8 user name and password not accepted.

Some searching has only brought up results from a few years ago.  This script reliably worked until a week ago and now fails.  Google has changed something and now bits are flying everywhere.

This needs to get fixed, and hopefully soon.  I can refer readers to a web page which has the same content, but the Email is much more convenient.

To quote Wimpy, I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a mail fix today.

Google has stopped accepted email over SMTP (even secure SMTP) and is rolling out requirements for OAuth authentication to send email, period. Legacy apps just aren’t going to work with Google any more. 

We use and recommend SMTP2Go as an easy SMTP provider that can be set up to work with just about anything.

I have seen this as well but Google does have three ways to use their SMTP server, including a static ip address or an “app password,” which is letters and spaces. I had this happen to a FreePBX that I maintain a few weeks ago and I setup Postfix to relay it using the app password from Google. See

They have been removing the app password functionality from accounts and domains on a phased basis, so it may already be removed for you or could be removed soon.
