OTA TV Recording

I've been using an HD Home Run dual tuner (current one is a couple of years old) and MythTV on Ubuntu to record OTA TV shows. While I've added internal and external drives, the computer itself is about 9 years old, so I am thinking I need to replace it before it croaks.

My perception has been that Myth TV seems to be dying, or at least not currently getting a lot of support.  (Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.)  And there are now several dedicated OTA recorders.

I want to record to a standard format, so I can do things like edit out commercials, and not be locked into one ecosystem.

ATSC 3.0 is on the horizon, so I'm not anxious to get something with a 2.0 tuner right now.

Any thoughts?

I bought into the HDHomeRun ATSC 3.0 tuner on Kickstarter back in April and expect to get my tuner shortly. As you may know, Nashville has two ATSC 3.0 transmitters carrying content from five participating stations and was one of the first five cities with ATSC 3.0 transmitter on the air.
As far as ATSC 1.0 reception, it will be around a while and I wouldn’t worry about putting a few dollars into newer hardware to run the system that you currently have if age is an issue.
I don’t know about MythTV, but I have not heard much on the horizon for it.
I’m happy to answer any questions you may have about tv or tv reception, since my day job is Director of Engineering for NewsChannel 5  I’ve been a mostly lurking NLUG member since 1997.

I know of people using plex and HD Home Run. A quick Duck Duck Go search led me to https://support.plex.tv/articles/225877347-live-tv-dvr/

Hope it works for you!

I've had Plex set up for years, and have considered paying for Plex Pass so I can record with it. They kinda pissed me off when they stopped allowing plugins. Due to this, I have started considering paying for Emby Premiere.

One option I had forgotten about, HDHomeRun offers their own DVR service for $35/yr. They suggest a Linux based NAS, but you can also use an always on Windows/Mac/Linux PC. PC use, I'd still be looking at possibly getting a new one since existing is 9 years old.

Decision made, new computer. I'll need a new one next year anyway, and I needed a fresh Linux install (still has the 4 try logout process).  Tax free weekend helped. (Next weekend is tax free restaurants. 😀)  Linux based NAS is still on the list for a future purchase.
