links with redirect not working with nightwatch

Our web app developers constantly modify the links to documentation and build redirects into old links. As soon as a redirect is added to a link, my test starts failing. The test opens the link in a new tab, then it stays on a blank page and is unable to redirect to a new link in the browser, causing the test to fail. Asking for help in case someone has any ideas.

nightwatch version = 0.9.21

browser = chrome

is it possible to modify the links to open in the same window ? it might solve the problem.
