Volume 2 of Cardiovascular Diseases in Nigeria

Dear Colleagues,

I wish us all a productive 2025. You may recall that you had given me the responsibility to serve as the editor of our textbook initiated by NCS when Dr Ogah was President. Topics were assigned to teams with leads and widely circulated. We all went to sleep. Since I was on sabbatical in the Gambia then and escaped the bite of the sleeping bug, I set to work. With some nudging some teams woke up and contributed chapters which we compiled into Volume 1 and unveiled in PortHarcourt. At that meeting it was restated with all agreeing to send outstanding chapters so that Volume 2 will come early this year.

2025 has come and no single contribution has been submitted. I am taking the liberty to attach the scheme which we all agreed and committed to  in order to rouse us all from sleep. May I plead that we get back into the trenches and start sending chapters for editing and approval. It is my desire to go to press immediately after Easter so as to have the Volume 2 ready for the 2025 NCS conference. The following should please take note and do the needful as is said in Nigeria

8. Cardiovascular Disease Prevention in Nigeria - Dr Amadi et al

9. Pharmacotherapy of Cardiovascular Diseases - Dr Adedapo 

10. Heart Disease in Pregnancy - Prof Mbakwem et al

11. Cardio-Oncology - Prof Alikor et al

12. Thyroid Heart Disease - Prof Danbauchi et al

13. Normal ECG in Nigerians - Prof Katibi et al

14. Congenital Heart Disease in Adults - Prof Ejim et al

15. Stroke in Nigeria - Dr. Akinyemi et al.

Comprehensive schedule is attached. Prof Karaye and I are willing and waiting to do the job you assigned to us unless you wish to move a vote of no confidence. As usual I come in peace and tranquility.

Dear Colleagues,

Two weeks ago, I reminded leads of outstanding chapters for our proposed Volume 2 of Cardiovascular Diseases in Nigeria on the outstanding tasks. Sadly I got no communication about willingness to comply. I hope the silence is not a polite way of ignoring the fool as we used to be told in primary school that the best answer to a fool is silence.

I suggest that the NCS whose project it is to rise up to the occasion and take responsibility. Leads who are time constrained should speak up and ask to be changed or moblise their teams to action. Those who see their teams as somewhat dysfunctional should suggest additional hands for their teams. Do not account to me but to Exco of NCS

For me the train has left the station. Unless NCS give me a vote of no confidence the time lines have been activated and what ever I receive by mid April goes to the press. I shall send interval reminders every forthnight. The earlier the manuscripts roll in the easier the task thrust upon Prof Karaye and myself. Need I say more? Long live NCS.

I wish to sadly report that my plea to Chapter leads to indicate willingness to continue with the tasks they willingly (I hope as I was away on sabbatical leave when the assignments were given and accepted) accepted towards the NCS Textbook of Cardiovascular Diseases yielded lean harvest.

Dr Ajeh et al reported ongoing efforts in the Chapter on Pericardial Diseases. Prof Odili et al have turned in their chapter on Hypertension and Hypertensive Heart Diseases. Dr Ogah et al have turned in their Chapter on Heart Failure. Prof Ejim et al have turned in their chapter on Congenital Heart Disease in Adults. 

I beg the NCS Exco that negotiated this to help intervene and persuade colleagues to turn in chapters by end of April at the latest or reassign Chapters. I am yet to hear from the following colleagues

2. Prof Isezuo et al - Ischaemic Heart Disease
