You can now SEND and RECEIVE Short Digital Text Messages on the TampaBay Area NXDN Repeater Network.  Testing conducted this past weekend confirmed the ability to send a message through the Verna, Riverview, Seminole, Pasco and Polk NXDN repeaters and have it repeaters through all other repeaters.

There is still one SDM disconnect, what appears to be an incompatibility between messages sent using ICOM radios and messages sent using Kenwood radios.  While both kinds of messages are passing successfully through the repeaters and NXCore, your ICOM radio can only decode ICOM messages.  Kenwood messages can only decode Kenwood messages.  Additional research into this compatibility issue is continuing.

Same problem exists with DMR SMS between manufacturers as they have their own variations on the protocol.

This is overcome on the BrandMeister network by having the option to specify the type of radio you are using in the portal and the messages are reformatted as they pass through the central server before being forward on.

Fascinating Mark.  Sounds like something similar needs to be put in place on NXCore networks.  Of course, all of this would not be needed if the manufacturers would just get together and stop trying to re-invent the wheel at every turn.

If you can't be part of the solution you can make a lot of money perpetuating the problem.

Is Kenwood and Icom still Cross Band interconnected? Or is it now truly linked via Software now?

I had decoded the text messages when I originally started the software repeater back in the day.

The changes to the NXCore software made this past weekend now allow the transmission and reception of both ICOM and Kenwood originated SDM made on the network.  However, Kenwood radios are not decoding the ICOM originated messages and vice versa.  ICOM Tech Support has confirmed there are differences in the message format being used.  The challenge is finding out exactly what Kenwood’s format and protocol is to enable a translation to bring the two format together, even if that means transmitting each message twice (worst case scenario).

It def would be a nice to have. feature!

my kendwood nx series rig on dmr worked out of the box for. the dmrid to name/callsign. but that was a brandmeister feature (or hotspot function)as prev mentioned. but very handy since the rig itself can’t hold the ham database.

As for the callsign display on NXDN, you should have it now, thanks to
some recent updates. I've seen it work on Icom repeaters and hotspots.
Not living near a Kenwood repeater, I haven't been able to test that
function on the Kenwood network. No need to load ID numbers in your
database.

Let us know how it works on your NX.

i was looking at the nxdn radios but not sure which one works on your network,  Not all too familiar with nxdn.  I would appreciate it you could advise me on which radio I can get that would allow me to converse on your repeater.  I am not into fancy, or extensive features.  I just would like a recommendation for a relatively inexpensive radio.
Thanks
Nik

Nik….

ICOM and Kenwood NXDN radios operating in Conventional Very Narrow mode work for voice communications.  However, ICOM also provides full compatibility with voice and Short Digital Messaging (texting with your radio).

These ICOM radios work well on the NI4CE system:

F4161DS/DT portable radio

F4261DS/DT portable radio

F6061D mobile radio

F2100DS/DT portable radio  w/OTAA

F4400DS/DT portable radio w/OTAA

F6400D mobile radio w/OTAA

OTAA short for Over-the-Air-Alias allows you to transmit your callsign automatically each time you press the PTT key.  OTAA also displays the callsign information from other OTAA capable radios you receive.

I hope this helps.

Rick….

First, know there are two different versions of the F4261DT.  One operates 400-470 MHz.  The other operates 450-512 MHz.  If you have the latter, you will not be able to work the Ham Band with it.  You need the 400-470 Low Split version to work the 70cm Ham Band.

YES, I recommend getting the Programming Cable for it.  The official ICOM cable is the OPC-1862.  This cable will also double as a Serial Cable for connecting to your computer to use apps like the forthcoming NXDNMsg for ICOM Windows messaging app.

The F4261DT will do NXDN right out of the box.  However, you want to make sure you have the latest firmware in the radio for the best results, particularly the DSP firmware, version 3.2.  The latest Main firmware is version 5.4.  Once you have a programming cable and the programming software, pull down the CLONE menu and select INFORMATION to see the latest firmware versions.

The AMBE2+ vocoder is actually on the motherboard.  It was one of the improvements ICOM made (over the F4161DT).  The Final P.A. chip is also better than its predecessor.

Hope this helps

Thanks for your input.  I found a F4161DT 61 which has the correct frequency range of 400-470mhz.  Looks like the programming cable costs as much as the radio unless I get an aftermarket cable.  I saw somewhere that it’s risky to use a non OEM cable. And then there’s the software.  I think that’s another $60 or so.  I’m trying to do this on a budget.  I understand I need to check the firmware update but since it has the full keypad, I wondered if it’s possible to program it manually to start with so at least I can get on the air.  I looked at the manual and I’m still not clear on how it handles the repeater offsets.  I guess I’m still thinking analog.  Thanks again for the help getting started.

Hi Rick,

WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF HAM RADIO NXDN!

Checking for you, yes, the cable is LIST $110.00 , I can get it for you at $82.50

Some of us will can play santa and get you the software for that Icom.

Grant it, I can get you ball park NEW IN BOX prices, I can also get you technical info like

Paul can as well.

There are several other options but I will have to do it one on one as I work for a Dealer that is both Icom and Kenwood

And have resources for a ham friendly Kenwood dealer in Lakeland.

Kenwood have several lines of NXDN capable radios from basic model around NX-1000NU 285.00

To the dual digital mode NX-5000 radio that will do 2 digital modes, P25, NXDN, DMR, in one radio,

that will set you back some… 950.00 on up depending on how you want to play.

There are some who have the NX-5300 radio and play both DMR, P25, and NXDN (depending on codeplug loaded)

And a few who have the mobiles also.

There are other radios out there to work with also, that are used, still supported but not in mass production,

That it the NX-x20 series portables and mobiles. This line was ramped up with the now NX-3000 series.

That is just as functional as the 5000, only it does not do P25, but comes with NXDN and DMR, but only

1 at a time.

NX-3000 mobiles start around 500.00

Software and cable(s) are $120 each for hams.

I also offer WideBand software at $155.00 This allows for 400-450 and GMRS wide band.

END COMMERCIAL.

Need more info, email me direct.

Welcome to NXDN!

Rick....

Because the Part 90 rules for FCC Type Acceptance prohibit direct user programming, you cannot directly program a frequency with the keypad.  Sorry.
