Good afternoon Chronicle readers. Shelter-in-place orders due to expire at the end of the week will now be extended through May for much of the Bay Area — but there may be easing for "lower-risk activities."

While sheltering in place has been effective in the Bay Area, which saw a drop in new cases for the third consecutive week, it hasn’t had the same effect in Los Angeles County, which accounts for nearly half of the state’s cases and more than half of the deaths.
