Is now the perfect time to recruit new players? Due to COVID-19 most of the world is in lockdown and going online for work or just gaming in general. They have more spare time which they could devote to a game like Netrek.

I don't know about recruiting, but at the very least we could get
together for some scheduled playing!

Are there active servers still running?  And does anyone know if there is a decent Windows10 client out there?  All I've seen thus far are old Win98 clients and Mac clients.

Thx,
Exodus!!!

I haven't played in over 20 years I think, but I'd be up for giving it a go.  Assuming there is a decent Windows10 client available.

Hey Exodus!

Yes there are still 2 active bronco servers.

The latest Windows client is Netrek XP 2009 v1.0. Not written for Windows 10, but it's much better than the Windows 98 clients. There is also a more bare bones Window client Netrek XP Mod v4.4.0.4.
You can downlod both clients here!

How about we try to get a game together on the last day of each month at 6PM Pacific, 9PM Eastern on continuum.us.netrek.org?

That makes the next game this Thursday 4/30 6PM Pacific, 9PM Eastern.  Spread the word!

For those of you running recent Macs, my Swift “Netrek” client is free in the MacOS App Store.  Just search on “Netrek”.  The old MacOS client is 32-bit and does not run on the latest MacOS :-(

My apologies in advance for the “team selection / launch ship” issue in my client:

1) Select server
2) Select Preferred team
3) Launch ship -> Cruiser

(if that is rejected, pick different teams and retry launch -> cruiser).  I was never able to figure out how to get my client to pick a team automatically that worked.  Open source code is at https://github.com/darrellroot/SwiftNetrek

pickled has better connectivity and is east-coast US so is a bit better
for European players as well.

I've always wondered; what's the difference between picked and
continuum, other than they're different servers?

The server list doesn't shed much light:

Actually we used to hold scheduled games on Sunday afternoon (3PM EST) so that way European players could join in.

How about we pick a midweek game such as the one proposed for Thursday
evening for NA-centric folks and also try a Sunday afternoon game to
allow for European players. I think both slots might allow for PacRim
players?

People may be locked up at home but many do have time commitments for
work and such that will impact them no matter what time(s) we choose; I
feel by providing for additional time slots we may afford such players a
greater opportunity to take part.

I still, however, feel that pickled is a better spot due to network
connectivity but I may be a bit jaded. I mean no disrespect to James or
Real Time (hosts of continuum) but whenever I've run network profiling
against both servers from multiple geo-disparate locations I get
consistently better results from for pickled. To be fair, there has
been little need to do much of this over the past many years but the few
pokes I took at it today validated previous results. If I have time
I'll poke it from multiple endpoints in the next day or so. I need to
spin up a bunch of boxes for CentOS release seeding so I'll have an
opportunity to do so over the next couple days.

I second the midweek suggestion.

I am fine with pickled, but just in case it would be helpful, I just deployed a server on Google Cloud in us-east-1:  netrek.redbudcomputer.com

Presumably Google should have decent connectivity.

In the meantime, I added a script that will keep bots pummeling it out in T-mode in case any one wants to practice.  For my part, I haven't played in forever; doubt I even remember the keys.

The bots are running 7-on-7 as is, but whenever a human joins the script will automatically kill a robot to keep the teams balanced and when the human drops out a bot comes back in.

I'm going to be playing on Thursday.  I ran into someone on pickled yesterday and let them know something was happening Thursday; they said they'd check out this thread.
