I thought I read somewhere that there was going to be a dedicated "device role" for cable management, shelves, and patch panels. While these are not devices, it is nice to have a placeholder in the elevation view for things like this. I created roles for this, that show up in the device table, but are technically non-devices. Is there a way to hide these, or have a "non-device" designation in a role?

My apologies if this is documented and I completely missed it.

Thanks,
Jason

NetBox models all of thee as devices (usually unnamed devices). You can create a manufacturer called "Generic" if you don't care to track the specific makes, and then a device type of "shelf," "24-port patch panel," etc.

What exactly prevents them from appearing in the device table, but included in the elevation view?
I currently did the patch, shelf, cable tray as device types, but they appear in the device table. I must be missing something subtle here...

Thanks,
Jason

Nothing prevents them from appearing in the device table, because they're devices as far as NetBox is concerned. You can filter by device role if you need to exclude them from the table.

Thinking about this more, it would be nice to have a way to add lab infrastructure to the rack, without it being considered a device at all. I poked around a bit more, and found the rack reservation thing may be a better way to accomplish this, where you can claim specific rack units for physical lab/rack infrastructure. Then it would show up on the Elevations view, and not be considered a device. The only thing I would change is providing a way to optionally specify the color of the stripey field in the elevation, kinda like a role for the rack reservation.

I assume the rack reservation feature is primarily used for planning purposes, however it would be nice if it displayed the name in the RU like a device. I see it in a mouse flyover, but that does not work so well on any phone or tablet, where the elevation view is really useful.

Thoughts?
Jason
