How many people would be interested in 3 digit Nixie car gauges?

I'm just asking this question to get an idea for what the market would look like. I'm in the process of making one, but it is still in the beginning stage of development.

I would be interested in how you are going to house the unit, and how it would work, i.e. where does the signal come from.

Hopefully it monitors sensors reporting onto OBD II / CAN bus .  One of many things I wish I had time to explore........

I'm doing the same thing! For my 1940 LaSalle, but generally adaptable. My friend Tom Jennings has made a car computer for his Rambler roadster, and knows how to process the sender signals in an Arduino.

My goal would be to have it housed in the standard/universal 52mm/2” gauge housing, and for the sensor I would use the pre-existing electronic sensors for led/lcd digital gauges.

One problem other people have had with such projects is mechanical vibration causing cathodes to short out

Good to know, thanks for the input. That problem could be dealt with by implementing some sort of shock absorber the easiest being padding and the more complicated, but perhaps better being spring suspension. Again, thank you for the input, better to know about these potential bugs before they arise.

I did something similar to this.  I machined brass 1-1/2" pipe couplings to make the standard gauge bodies, and 3D-printed a support structure to clamp the dial glass (I used polycarbonate) and support the tubes - three tubes per gauge.

The big secret though was not using Nixies - I used Numitrons (actually, the Russian IV-9 equivalents) instead.  These things are exceptionally rugged - the specs for the American DA-2000 Numitrons include numbers like: life expectancy - 100,000 hours; impact acceleration (operating) 100 Gs; vibration (10Gs) 10-200 Hz; etc.  They're designed for use in fighters, among other things, so they're really robust.  I used several in a Burning Man vehicle, which wasn't that log duration but was pretty severe service, and they worked with complete reliability (except for the one that was broken mechanically - and even then continued to work for a while!).
