Mouser is a great source for new electronic parts. Their selection is
about as good as Newark or Allied but they are much more small buyer
friendly. They have a real cheap shipping option ($4.95?) and if I
remember right no minimum order. It is easy to set up an account. They
ship fast and they have a nice project builder tool. The search tools work
well. I have made several purchases from them for antique radio rebuilds
and have been very happy.
I hate to see a tube type Tek scope dismantled for high voltage caps
unless it is trashed.

I agree, Mouser has been great for my current projects.  I like how you can save a project list so when I do another, it is easy to order up just the parts I need without spending extra.
They have always shipped quickly and for a decent price.  They do have a $10 minimum, but that is easy to meet.

Also, note that Digikey has no minimum order, no handling fee, and a $2.92 1st  class USPS shipping option for small (under 8oz) orders.

Great if you just need a couple of parts (and live in the US).

Yes, but Digikey is generally considerable more expensive.
I don't know you know RS in the US (it's here comparable with Mouser and Farnell) ,  but doesn't allow private purchases anymore since about four years.
Farnell is also a good and important supplier, but is priced between Digikey and Mouser.
Anyhow, it's wise to compare prices before placing an order.

Just to be clear. When I mentioned that H.V. caps could be had from older Tek and H-P scopes I had no intentions of having folks take parts from something that was possibly resurrectable, but rather from a unit that was uneconomical to repair, defective CRT, power transformer, etc, or was already a parts donor.  I've been in instrumentation and test equipment most of my adult life and have the greatest respect and admiration for the more vintage gear.    Ira.

I'd also recommend Jameco, as their prices seem reasonable and have excellent customer service. I do place a lot of orders with Mouser...Digikey seems a little more expensive and I find navigating their website a bit tedious...

From the UK, you can order from Digi-Key or Mouser with zero shipping cost if you order more than GBP 50 - I have done this several times and its very quick & good.

RS in the UK is owned by Electrocomponents, who also own Allied Electronics in the US. Farnell are part of Element14 who also own Newark.

Mouser is owned by Berkshire Hathaway (CEO Warren Buffett).

Thanks for the correction on the minimum order, I didn't remember. I
always try to combine things I may need to get an order that makes it
worth paying the shipping for. Like you said a $10 minimum is pretty easy
to meet! The project lists are real nice for future reference. They list
something like 340,000 different capacitors, so when you find what you
need it is nice to have a record for finding it again!

From the US (and, I'm guessing, elsewhere) you can also get free shipping from Digi-Key "if a check or money order accompanies your order".

http://dkc1.digikey.com/us/en/mkt/terms.html

Digi-Key does tend to be expensive for small orders (they're competitive when you order things in quantity), and their free shipping is generally slow. But if you need an obscure part in a hurry, they're great - most of my orders ship within 20 minutes of my submitting the order, and if I pay for fast shipping, I can have my parts in a couple of days.

For common parts quickly, however, I go to my local Radio Shack. Which is *very* local - the one in the town where I used to live went out of business and I bought most of their carded stock on the cheap, and hung it up on pegboard in my back room:

If I need a common part at three in the morning, there's nothing like being able to just grab one without even having to leave my house!

I did some more checking and Mouser has no minimum order, that according
to their help topics page. The shipping options come up when you check
out. For the small parts I was ordering I used the lowest cost option as I
am in no hurry. The parts arrived quickly, they ship out very quickly! I
placed an order late at night and realized I forgot a part. I called early
in the morning when the customer service line opened. I told the lady I
needed to add a part to my order. She said it was too late it had all
ready been packed and shipped! Better yet for me she gave me free shipping
for my extra part, that was very nice! Another nice thing about mouser is
that you can share your project list with other people.
I checked on Newark and they say no minimum order charges. I ordered
from them $175 worth of parts and the shipping was a very reasonable
$8.04. The outer box the parts came in was ridiculous. My parts would
have fit in a box half the size of a shoe box. They came in a box about
18x24x36 inches! What a waste of materials and shipping space. This
seems pretty normal for a lot of commercial purchases I make.

Yes, but Digi-Key will do price matching.

I just did that last winter on some bulk ics from
Digi-Key. Mouser had then cheaper so I just called
Digi-Key back and told them and they refunded the
difference. That ended up getting the best of both
places. Digi-Key packs and ships very promptly and
professionally, and Mouser was cheaper than Digi-Key
on these items. No problem. Digi-Key will price match!

Digi-Key will also haggle prices and come down
considerably from their published catalog prices if
one asks them to.

Most people never bother to ask. Try it and see for
yourself.

Hey John,

That parts wall reminds me of how Radio Shack use to look. I recent years (at least 10, maybe 20) they keep most of their parts in metal cabinets. Only a small percentage of their parts, is still stocked on the wall.

I can't really add to much more to this discussion, other than I personally, buy from all them (Mouser, Digikey, Newark, and Jameco). Never knew about the haggling part though. Newark, though, does run sales on certain parts. On my last buy from them, I bought small capacitors for ~1.5 cents each, for any quantity. At Mouser, this part usually runs ~5 cents, in quantities of 100.

And for being a pack rat, and stores that closed:

I bought that transformer, while the Olson chain was still in Business. They closed ~1980, or so.

I've used Digikey, Mouser, and Jameco many times for the past 30 years. All of them are excellent suppliers.

The reasons I use Digikey the most are:
1. They have an enormous inventory, and on rare instances they dont have the exact part in-stock, they have identical devices from other suppliers in-stock
2. The bill-of-materials (BOM) manager is great for managing your projects, especially when you decide to make additional copy of a project
3. Very fast shipping with full-tracking. If my order is placed Wednesday, I have my parts on Friday so I can work on my project that weekend
4. Pricing is competitive. If I hunt around I can save a small amount of money with another supplier, but it's extra effort, shipping cost, and time.
Remember, time is money, too.
5. Excellent customer service. I've ordered thousands of parts from them, and only had a few missing items. They ship the replacement right away.

Another Place that I sometimes get parts is Electrosonic. They USED to
be in suburban Toronto, but they have moved their main warehouse to
Upper new York State thanks to NAFTA.

http://www.e-sonic.com/

I don't recall hitting a minimum order - and they tend to have a lot of
industrial type parts.
