Absolutely absurd! Especially if the guy gets that price!

Way too much!  Maybe pros like Dalibor will make a special model just for us "crazies"?  Meanwhile, I'll continue on 3 separate clock projects, IN-12, B-5750S and ZM1005.  Sure they are smaller but fine looking tubes.

Funny Man!  I actually have some nice 1" NE-2s once used as a ones digit in a freq counter.  Much too long for a colon.  I'll post em!

There was an auction awhile back for a MOD-SIX with tubes that was the same price range as these 7971's by themselves...

That's great for those of us that have been holding them for 10+ years waiting for the right time. :)

I still haven't posted mine, but I might to just post at those type of prices.

My only question is: Why 5? Not 4 or 6.

I did notice there's only 5.  Not practical for most if our clocks.  I was thinking of making a seven digit with user selectable 10ths of seconds?  Too much movement?  What do you think?

Hahaha you never know. Just put "special edition" or something equally ludicrous in there, with a best offer option. You might a good fraction of that price!

It’s ironic there are actually fewer 5971’s than 7971’s. Yet, the 7971 goes for absurd prices due to size. The 7971 is actually a really common tube. I suspect the 7971 is the Tulip Mania of DIY electronics. It’s a bubble and it will pop eventually, if my suspension is true.

I suspect folks just don't know about communities like this, and feel a certain pressure to pick up certain tubes from the only sources they are aware of aka Ebay

Kevin,

I couldn’t help myself.  If the bubble is going to persist, then I decided to jump in.

That first auction is mine.

You missed one auction….

https://www.ebay.com/itm/123727599571

As for the second one you linked.  That is the guy that posted the pair that sold for over $500 (which is why I posted).  The problem is he is a new ebayer and just received another negative rating (Not saying he is a bad seller).

So,  since the 4 sold, I see no harm in posting more.

I don't blame you! It's a market economy.

I only feel bad for younger makers who are interested in the hobby but don't have unlimited cash.

If pensioners are out there blowing their retirement on inflated tubes it does drive out some of the upcoming creative types before they have a chance.

But we all know that money talks at the end of the day...

I agree to a point.

I was late to the game and people said not to pay 75-100 per tube, because it was considered a spike in price back then.  People told me they had been selling for $20 each or 7 for $100.  I also heard the horror stories about people buying in bulk and the shippers just threw them in boxes.  It was sad to see many 7971’s crushed.

I have a few broken myself.  Hell, I became angry as all hell when I dropped one.

;^} I look at it as an investment that's at least a valuable as my 401k securities are.  I scored a sweet deal on a Metcal MX-PS5000 soldering station with all the extras last night.  My semi decent soldering station is going to be handed down I think.

Yes, totally out of hand, i own 18pcs of this tubes... would make a fortune to resell them, but i keep them because i like them, and i like them even more.

Personally i think, even tubes are now a victim of social media. I have a personal profile on Instagram and i see alot of electronics and even nixie clocks there some times, since most of the people seeing stuff online in social media (fb, ig etc) don't know jack about electronics, they just look for something to buy thats a finished product, price doesnt matter. I noticed prices going crazy over vintage stuff all the time, and i get spammed by people that want to purchase stuff out of my collection. Actually people offer 700$ for a pandicon tube, wtf.

Hopefully the hype will be over some day :) Some days i think about purchasing 5mm LED's for 0.10$ and vacuum them in bags to sell them for 10$ in 40 years :-)... or those 2x16 LCDs heheheh
