Change C4 from 1uF/250V to 4.7uF/250V.
Apparently when the displays go from lit to dark, there is a little spike on the 180V supply.
Increasing the size of the cap dampens this and stops the crashing. Two of the three I built
were afflicted with the problem in three of the 4 display modes. They are stable now.
Also, Merry Christmas and all that stuff.
