Nice design! What is the black material on the sides?

T-molding like on arcade game cabinets?

I've never understood the fascination with red windows over displays or coatings on tubes.  I think they look much better with clear or nothing over them.

I forgot about that one. It's been a while.

I like test equipment so I prefer the higher contrast. I don't especially like multiplexing as it makes the tubes dimmer.

Went red as I have  over 10 unfiltered clocks  scattered around the house.  Wanted a nice change.
The side panels are simple plastic provided with the red aluminum enclosure. Found it on Jameco.
The milling was done an a 30+ year old Fadal mill and the red bezel was laser cut.

Cool.   I have instruments with red and orange as well.   I just like the natural color of the tubes I guess!

Also have an old manual South Bend vertical mill that is nice and tight.   A couple years ago got a Bridgeport 2J2 mill with more wear but a DRO cheap and rebuilt the head.  I think my brother in AZ will get the SB as I don't need two mills.

While I prefer the bare bulbs as well (ZM1022 vs ZM1020 for example), I understand the desire to filter out the blue tint that comes from the mercury in some tubes in order to get a relatively pure red digit.
