Finally completed this NL7037 clock/space heater. Vacuum-tube power supply, ESP32 processor for networking, clock, sounds etc.

I'll do a write-up on the odyssey that got me here in a few weeks. It has been fun.

Meters for the HV and nixie tube current - That's DC voltage, not AC

Back view, with the teeny tiny WiFi antenna. The knob controls the HV level.

Martin, one of your mini neons is the power indicator. That’s I wanted them all that time ago.

How long did it take to find these unobtanium tubes ? That in itself is an impressive feat.
I wont ask how much; it pains me even to think how much those tubes fetch in auctions.

The nostalgic 'tube chassis' appearance brings back a lot of memories from that era. Well done.

I'm facing touch choices for the design of my R|Z568m clock because our small house is a bit cluttered, and with 6 nixie clocks already in-use display-space has to be negotiated.
Most likely I will make a hardwood console for all of the video equipment and sneak-in the clock.

Really beautiful and well done!

What's the purpose of the LDR in front?

The writeup will make a very interesting read, I'm sure.

It took me a couple of years to find the tubes. I got them for a bit less than the price of R|Z568 tubes.

I hear you about design choices. I really don't have space for all the clocks I have now, but this one was a labor of love.

The LDR is read by the ESP32 which uses the value to dim the nixies and the LEDs. The meters don't dim - the power comes straight from the 6V3 filament winding for them. The little neon is a mains power indicator. It is wired straight across the inputs (with a suitable resistor). It was a safety feature when I was bread-boarding this thing. Now, when the clock display is turned off, you can see power is still applied because that still glows.

Paul, where did you get the case from? Standard chassis and cut to fit or a custom job?

Custom job from protocase, I used their 5-sided enclosure in aluminum. I was intending to use raw finish and polish it up, but it arrived brushed so I left it like that.

it's a nice little neon!
Question:  Where did you get those cool tiny meters?  I had thought to install a small non-digital volt meter on one of my clocks.
Also, what did you use for a back-light?

Paul Andrews

These particular ones include the backlight which is an incandescent bulb. They are also the smallest I could find. There are slightly bigger ones that look the same that you can take the back off, then you could stuff any kind of light in there you like, assuming the display is translucent I guess.

You can also get LED backlit meters.

I couldn’t find a DC meter with a suitable scale, so I just bought the AC one and put a suitable resistor in series. I had bought one of the bigger ones to see how they make them into AC meters, and it is basically just a diode.

These kinds of meter are used in some tube amps for “adjusting the bias”, so they are really specced for that purpose. On AliExpress you can get the bigger ones with almost any spec you like.

It does look like a monoblock tube amp for sure.  The tubes, obviously, transformer, and meters totally make it look like one!

What a great looking piece of nixie art!  It is a one of a kind that is unique in many ways.  Love the industrial look and the great sounds.  It will need a strong shelf...  😀
