OT: Inspecting phosphor-containing devices with UV light

I received a UV wand as a holiday gag-gift, and it's very useful for inspecting phosphor coatings on many devices, such as CRTs, NIMO, VFD, and electroluminescent.

I was surprised to see the face of my 8SJ31J CRT was slightly burned already being used as a scope-clock, even though it's only been on for 1-2 weeks over the past 2 years.

I bought two different wavelength UV lights recently. IIRC 395 and 360 nm. I haven't used them much but I will check out all my CRTs now! I got them to look for UV reactive glass at thrift shops and on the beach.

I have a CRT with dual phosphors, a fast blue and a slow yellow. It lights up like a Christmas tree when exposed to an 18" BL-B tube. 

You can draw pictures on an old television or computer monitor.

I built the sand version of the clock. Erasing the time with the vibration motor never worked properly.

Are you referring to the Axiris version with the servo arm? They made a laser based version afterwards that works quite well...

I built the version published by the German Make Magazine. I also bought the kit for the laser based version from Elektor but I never built it, must be in the basement somewhere.

I recommend not using really cheap servos, they tend to make the numbers a little wobbly sometimes.... LOL. I tried a few different phosphor papers with different colours too, some of them are quite attractive (if you're into that kind of thing).. there was an update to the software to use a PIR so it only wrote the time when appropriate....
