Hi folks,

I just finished the design for a seven-tube (unorthodox I know) 7971 board I built 3/4 for fun, 1/4 for work. I elected to use seven tubes for two reasons - six digits for time and a seventh digit to denote either local (L) or GMT (Z) time, and to display MEDEVAC/DUSTOFF on the "home" screen. I currently have it pulling TAF and METAR weather data off the NWS, but as it uses an ESP8266, it can more or less do anything that the internet can provide. It has an IR receiver for remote actuation.

Two questions:
1.) Would anyone be interested in purchasing a fully assembled board (no tubes of course) for $300.00? I am not trying to make a profit, only trying to recoup the assembly and prototype costs. I have four to provide. I also have four fully-assembled boards without the IR receiver capability that I would sell for $250.00. I will include the standoffs with purchase and pay for shipping for either option. Will ensure the shipping appropriately protects the board. Shoot me a message if interested. I don't intend on producing any more than I currently have.

2.) Any general additions you think might be neat?

Attached are some photos. I don't have a seventh 7971 yet, so that's why you only see six tubes in operation there.

Developing this was tons of fun. Thanks to ShadowTron Blog whose excellent YouTube video series on a 7971 board helped me develop my own custom board.

* if this was posted before, apologies, I received a mail delivery subsystem message alerting me my original post was too large*

I would, but tube costs would bankrupt me  - especially 7 :>)  I really like the NWS weather data integration.

Count me in. I'll send a direct message. The PCB looks good.

I like it.

Are you providing the source code / gerber files, etc?

If so, I am interested in the IR version.

Really looking forward to this clock. It's a sweet looking PCB with a good message too. These will always be unique being 7 digits too. I'm excited to see these standoffs that were custom developed! 7 letter word anyone?

Glad the response has been so positive! I will put a video up of the weather forecasting in action once I receive my seventh tube in the mail next week.

I am out of gold plated standoffs. I purchased them from Dalibor Farny, and had some extra. I will include regular ole brass standoffs for anyone who still wants a board. Since I don’t have the gold plated standoffs, the IR version is $250.00 and the non IR capable version is $210.00. I have three left of both types with no intentions of producing more.

I recently finished building an open source RPN calculator board to be used with dalibors tubes, and an ancillary matrix keypad. I was always fond of the old HP RPN handheld calculators, and wanted to do a Nixie tribute. I’ll showcase that next weekend in case anyone wants one. Again, I only intend on selling the extra boards I have (I’ve got seven of those).

Thanks for the support

I too grew up with RPN and HP calculators in school! At first it made no sense to me but after using for years and becoming a CIS major it makes perfect sense now because postfix works the way the machine does.

Just a sneak peek at the RPN calculator board. I designed the keypad as well

I guess I was lucky, I had an after high school job selling calculators
and when HP started offering the HP-21 in stores, the sent a rep to give
the store folks a half day course on how to sell them. And yes, Hp said
that dropping them on the counter to show how rugged they were was an
aceted Sales technique.

Mahdi-

You've made other keyboards that interface like this before correct?  I've seen something like this before with ribbon cable connecting a the small keyboard and Nixie display.
Check out this roll of ribbon cable I bought made in 1974.  It has 48 lines.  4 sets of 12 different colors.

You can count me in when you're ready.

Hi there, Bill,

I have before, yep. That's a beast of a roll. Tried and true technology. I have begun moving away from the use of ribbon cables because cross-talk has bitten me a couple of times. I have been learning to write my own USB drivers, though it's still very much a work in progress.

We use embedded development tools where I work and they always have new plugins based around all the lastest USB IP (usually the latest next generation straight outta ACM and IEEE research).  It's totally non trivial 4 sure!  There's a LOT more to newer USB like USB type-C than I ever would have guessed.  Reading the documentation for it wow.  We've come along way since RS-232!  Sounds awesome though... Cutting edge new tech mixed with classic old tech like nixie, numitron, and dekatron is straight up bad a$$ as far as I'm concerned!

Yes, it's certainly not the simple and straightforward venture I thought it would be! It has been quite humbling. I have some other neat projects I am working on too - a Geiger counter with a nixie display and a ham radio with a magic eye for tuning. Will be a few months before those two are up and running. So much to try and learn - but so little time!
