I've never gotten into VFDs. Unlike Nixies they've been around all my life. There's one in the microwave oven sitting in our kitchen right now!

After the recent discussion about IN-23 prices it suddenly occurred to me to take a second look at the IV-4/IV-17. The idea of having a dozen or more of them in a row and watching text scroll by in Cyrillic, Roman, Klingon—whatever—is tantalizing. I took a look on eBay and...wow, they're still really cheap!

There are lots of clocks etc. available but what I really want is that ticker-tape effect.

I'm coming late to the party. What's available that fits the bill? I'm interested in something that's just the PC boards and software. I don't need a nice enclosure. I'd also like to be able to control it from something with a higher-level language than PIC or AVR assembler. The Arduino is an obvious choice but that's just one possibility.

I'll also ask for the moon: something that doesn't require soldering any surface mount components.

I hope you find something as I would be interested in very much the similar idea.   I can’t see to find anything other than 4 or 6 tubes.   I would love an Arduino controlled idea with the same sort of idea and many modular like 4, 8, 12, 16, 20 tube strings (possibly just shift registers down the line).

Comes in 6,8 and 16 digit flavo(u)rs. I can supply kits, but alas there is some SMD work involved (sorry Terry!). Not arduino controlled, so maybe not what you're looking for, but I can attest to 16 IV17 tubes looking awesome scrolling words..

Nicholas,

I would have purchased several of those kits if they were open source to the point that I could have gotten the code to do that.  I like making things other than clocks.

Would love to get some if you ever decide to open source it, but I completely understand why you wouldn’t want to.  😊

These are Mitch Feig's designs, so any open sourcing questions should be pointed his way.... :)

Take a look at the IV-17 Smartsockit project here https://groups.io/g/smartsockets/files/Smartsocket%20Files/IV-17%20based%20project
