Yeah, I've been thinking of getting him to engrave a couple Nixie watch
cases for a charity fundraiser or something. I think the price is a bit
unrealistic, though.

The auction details state that this is one of his personal watches - I thought he had two in total - why would he ever sell something that he's often said is one of his favourite things?

The vendor has feedback of 0 and a name that implies he/she registered just to sell this watch.

David - can you tell from the s/n if it really was bought by The Woz or was just one signed by him?

Nick,

I could identify the purchaser by the serial number written on a paper
record, with a bit of digging in my store room out back. I'm not quite
ISO 9000 compliant. That serial number is from about 2007, I think.

I have repaired a few of Woz's watches over the years, and have one in
the shop right now. He's hard on them, what with Segway polo and all that.

It may help his auction to get it authenticated by me, but I still think
the price is a bit optimistic.

Nick,

Sales slip attached. It was sold to Woz in 2009, with four other Nixie
watches. He can afford to buy stuff, I guess.

I also provide a photo of one other watch that he bought then but has
been wearing a lot. Notice how it's got that lived-in look. The one on
ebay looks like it was worn only for a few days.

Now you have his DNA, are you going to clone him?

David,

Speaking of your Nixie Tube watch, you mentioned a few years back of a case with larger lugs for the strap.

Did you ever start having these made?

I'd like to get one if you did.  I didn't see anything on your web page.

Thanks

I've been contemplating the meta-value of things. See the Apple item here:

http://www.bonhams.com/auctions/22247/

- one of the last items and there is the video on the first page.

USD 300,000 to USB 500,000 for an Apple 1? Plus buyer's premium - another 10% to 20% on top...

There must be some rich people who would be interested in this sort of
thing. This is curious, as it's not *their* Apple 1 computer, but
someone else's. It must be the historical significance, whatever that is.

I bought a piece of an old Univac computer from ebay many years ago, and
posted photos of it on my website. A historian/collector offered me a
rather large amount of money for it. His explanation was that it was
apparently the only surviving example of the hardware of this model of
machine. I didn't want it as much as he did.

And some years ago, a fine fellow mailed me a couple IBM 704 8-tube
logic modules for free. I suspect they'd be worth a good bit to a
collector, but I just keep one around the house to show people. I gave
the other one to my twin brother for the same purpose.

I'm glad that other people have money to blow on this sort of artifact.
