Not my auction - they are rare tubes though... http://www.ebay.com/itm/221561797737

No activity by the vendor in the last 12 months... who knows? They seem pretty up-front about the slight darkening on a couple of the tubes.

It's quite amazing how the large tubes list and often sell for such astronomical prices. Dieter's website has a pricelist from 1963, and the smaller tubes (5092) are cheaper today in absolute dollars than they were 50 years ago. That story changes for the big tubes with 2" tall numerals, which originally sold for $45 US, and one recently sold on Ebay for over 10 times that.

If only we could crank these out on a 3D printer.......

On a whim, I just bought two 50mm plano-convex lenses to see what a magnified 5092 looks like. I have no idea what kind of results I will get, but if it's even remotely decent I'll post photos in a few weeks.

A convex lense and a front view Nixie tube, that sounds like fun! Keep us posted!

A couple of points to be made here. Not that amazing at all, at least to me it's not. Back when Nixies were being made and used, the paramount use for Nixies was in some sort of instrumentation, frequency counters, voltmeters, and other digital readouts. Almost all of these used about one inch or smaller tubes, and they were made in the millions. The larger tubes were used for large displays, think of the display at the stock market, albeit a different type of Nixie, where maybe several hundred were used. I seriously doubt that there were more than a few thousand or tens of thousands of them made. The cost to make the larger ones was not that much more than the smaller ones back then. So what makes them worth so much more today. Two things. 1). Supply and demand. There are quite scarce. And. 2). What collectors are able and willing to pay for them.  Myself, I'm not willing to pay that much for these, and whoever buys them is going to have to come up with one more for a complete six digit clock.  My two cents worth.     Ira.

For the tube on the far right, how long does it take for tubes to darken this badly?

At some point, artisan nixie tubes will be cheaper than some of the largest NOS tubes that rarely show up. Of course, to get a
decent service life, either giver pills need to be found or created or there needs to be some other method for adding Hg vapor after
the tube is sealed from the vacuum pump.

Matt, you forgot about the B-7031, B-7032, B-7037, B-7038 (and their
national Electronics versions), and the NL-934 (not sure if there is an
equivalent Burroughs tube). All 50mm tubes ;-)

Not my auction either, but I know the seller, and he brought me these tubes to check out. I wired them up and created the composite photo to show all the digits evenly lit at 4mA. All the tubes are a little darkened, but it's very slight in the one on the left and most marked in the one on the right - I arranged them in order of darkening, left to right. It doesn't make much visible difference when the tubes are lit.

I thought he might sell them one at a time, but I see he's selling them as a set. Price wise, I think he's going by the fact that Z568s seem to go for $400 and they are common as dirt by comparison.

No bidders came forward to start at $2500 US. It's amusing to watch the bid-up during the last few seconds on these auctions, but the starting price was probably too high.

Yeah I think it was too high. It is weird, because I am sure they would have made at least $2500. Its all about psychology...

I think I'll suggest that he reposts and sells them singly. Maybe he should put them on Etsy as antiques, there seem to be a lot of monied folk over there.
