That depends on the terms of the patent. If it covered "digital clocks" generically, it might indeed have earned him that kind of money.

Any idea what the counter circuitry was like? I doubt it used ICs.
Possibly tunnel diodes ore relaxation oscillators?

Having a day job as a EE, when I have time to work on projects during nights & weekends, it's just for fun and learning.

But if I started selling kits, etc, it would become a second job and dont think I would find it relaxing.
