Hello guys,

I remember I read a post in the forum where someone showed a DIY red
filter on a nixie tube. I was searching hard, but I havent found it
again.
I am going to try making a red filter on my tubes, so I am looking for
tips and tricks first..
Any tips for a colours I could use for making this filter?

Dalibor, I had success with IN18's (thanks to Michael Barile for helpful advice) dipping the tubes in Pebeo Vitrea glass paint (make sure it's the transparent type, comes in a variety of colors...) then letting them dry upside down (occasionally removing the drops that form at the bottom as the paint flows and dries). They look pretty authentic once dry. I did try using some krylon glass paint spray but the finish wasn't great...

I bought the paint off Amazon, PM me if you need any more details,

Cheers,

Nick

Hi Dalibor

I used the Pebeo Vitrail colours with IV-9 numitrons, also by dipping, and it worked nicely. It did require some testing and dilution of the colours to achieve the effects I wanted, so you might want to try on some small test tubes before committing one of your lovely large tubes to the process.

French Enamel Varnish glass paint - known as "FEV" - available in a whole range of colours from various manufacturers.

I did some experiments which were pretty successful - see my avatar on this forum and also VFD FEV dip test Picassa Album, specifically the comments on Mauve VFD FEV dip test

FEV is available in a range of colours and works well - simple dipping is fine and gets a good finish - you don't have to be too cute, i.e. spinning etc. is not required - it coats and dries very evenly if hung upside down.

Hi,
Don't you need to bake this glass paint? At least on the Pebeo Vitrea 160 I have seen, it says it is a water based colour that becomes water resistant (dishwasher-safe) only after BAKING at 160 °C (325 °F).
Do nixies resist 160°C (and if yes for how long)

FEV is based on coloured shellac in an hydrocarbon-based (alcohol) solvent - it does not require baking, just dries in air as the solvent evaporates - it's like traditional French Polish.

The Pebeo Vitrea can't be baked on nixies, but you don't need to...that's only if you want the color to be really permanent..it is fine air dried.

Just out of interest, would the red coating disguise any issues if you were getting the 'Blue dot' appearing?

Paul, alas no...I can attest to that...you'll still see it. But, I quite like them...;-)

They look great. What colour did you use?
