As a matter of fact I am working on a clock for my wife.  :)

Is it a fair exchange Ron? Who is offering deals like that?

I am getting a pinball machine with a good shiny gas plasma dot matrix display very soon. Nick de Smith, you will have to come over and give it a spanking when I get it. It's called Who Dunnit and has a gumshoe murder mystery theme, complete with Peter Gunn soundtrack.

Who Dunnit flopped in the arcades because the storyline and gameplay is too complicated. Solve the clues and find the murderer. As a result only 2,416 were ever made and it's now rare. It has become a bit of an unsung hero cult machine for home users and sits up there with the best of them as a good collector's machine. Not everyone's cup of tea and most people never had the chance to play one, but I like it and the price is excellent.

As a result I have a pinball to sell, to make space. It's a Black Knight 2000, again very collectable, great sound and graphics. This example is excellent. Cabinet almost like new. If anyone in the UK is interested in this please contact me off list. Shameless plug. Neon alphanumeric displays in very good condition, no burn.

My "nixie" watch is inching forward. Normally I'm not into segmented displays, but this was such a nice display I had to make it into a project. I got it in the 1970's and kept it protected until I had the time & skill to make a PCB for it.

What you are seeing is the all-segments-on test. The DC-DC converter has been quite a challenge, as it runs on a 3.7V Li-ion battery and due to space constraints has to be very compact. It's working, though the transformer gets too hot if running continuously. Fortunately, the watch display is only on for a few seconds at a time. Obviously it's wasting critical battery energy, and I'm searching for another transformer as well as tweaking the flyback converter design.

Now, now, John - it's Christmas - retail therapy and all that!

True, mostly now I seem to collect audio valves, but I'm still partial to the odd bit of cold-cathode...

I've been working on non-nixie stuff... a bit of RF signal processing kit for this:

It's at the South Pole. I'm not going, but the gizmo is shipping out this Monday
AM.

It's a Sperry SP-151. Obviously it was intended to be used for clocks (AM, PM colon, tens-hours digit is only '1').
I havn't seen any of then in-use, so I wonder how many were built.

The unit I have was a sample my father received from Sperry; he used to design cockpit displays.

Can we get one of those from Alibaba?

If not... what kind of signals will that baby listen to, and why Antarctica? Low human-origin background noise?

David, I think you need some stabilisers on that latrine - it's listing a bit.

If I had the space I'd take you up on the black knight 2000. Hope it finds a good home

This project involves equipping the South Pole Telescope for Very Long
Baseline Interferometry (VLBI). This is a method of taking data
simultaneously with several telescopes in different parts of the world,
then shipping the data to a central correlator to detect interference
fringes between the 'scopes.

It's done at the South Pole because there's very little water in the
air. The receiver operating at hundreds of GigaHertz likes it that way.

The necessary equipment included a hydrogen maser for a stable timebase,
and a machine that will record a gigabyte per second to hard disk
continuously for several minutes.

The VLBI partner for the first test is the ALMA array in Chile, which is
a smaller interferometric array (up to 15 km baseline).

My job is building the equipment to massage the signal from the receiver
(the tuner's IF signal covers 4-8 GHz) and other stuff to power and
control the receiver.

It looks like a great project to work in, with a lot of technical challenges. Very interesting!

Thanks for the detailed answer.
