Hi all,

I am thinking about producing another batch of five B7971 clocks/displays (without tubes), and would like to know who might be interested.

Video of the clock/display in action: B7971 Dustoff IoT Board - YouTube

These new boards are outfitted with the improved ESP32s instead of ESP8266s. This is my last run of B7971 boards for the foreseeable future. The cost would be $300 + shipping.

Thank you.

I'd be interested! Is the METAR and TAF feature standard? I assume the airport ID is customizable?

Yes of course! Currently, it will immediately select the closest airport based on longitude and latitude data, but it is very easy to adjust the code to select a particular airport ID. I can help with that as needed. The current code for TAF/METAR is attached for reference. If purchased, I will adjust the code slightly, to support the ESP32 on the new boards.

Great! I'd likely take you up on the code help offer.  I did start out as an EE major in college but switched to Aeronautical Science when I got the flying bug. :)  I'm a Spirit Airlines Captain and live on an airport so the the METAR/TAF feature really speaks to me. LOL  Maybe a silly question but the board can display the current date and time correct?  Can it be configured to display both local and UTC  in turn?  Also, how often is the WX data displayed?  Thanks!

Hi, Peter, very cool! I have my commercial and instrument ratings in rotary aircraft (and am working on my commercial multi engine FW). Possibly ATP one day - we’ll see!

Yes, all of what you are requesting can be done seamlessly, though it requires a wifi network that you can connect to, to be available. Shouldn’t be a problem if you live at an airport!

I have one other interested individual, but need one more in order to make putting another batch in worthwhile (the $300 cost is near production cost, so it’s a loss if I can’t sell at least of four of five). I will let you know if that happens by email

Thanks!

Thank you. Would it be possible to get the pcb and all the parts , pcb not assembled ?

Yes that’s certainly possible but are you sure you would like that? There are more than 100 individual discrete transistors on the board, an equal number of individual pin sockets, and nearly double that number of SMD resistors.

Perhaps you really like soldering!

Yes. I like soldering all the parts. As well as smd parts ...

Okay, count me in for a board.  Good luck with the training!  Seems we're into the same things just in different order.  I'm working on learning microcontroller programming and PCB design.

Hi, Peter. Actually, yes! Happy to say there was sufficient interest to justify another batch. I will send out the details in the next few days. Looking forward to having these manufactured!

I’m down for two, more if it can be a generic data receiver and display, I have been wanting something like that, Burroughs nixie based  for a long, long time.

Hi, Peter (and Bill and others),

I owe you all some information, which I will get to this weekend. I apologize - I have been out of country for work related reasons, and have been away from my workstation, for much of the past few months. Finally, I have returned home. Be in touch soon.

Mahdi,

I would be interested in a second DUSTOFF board for my daughter down the street.  I could send her simple greetings and updates.

Whew! Sorry again everyone. Been out of the country again, and will be leaving to Australia in early June for a couple months. Work has been crazy this year. That said... here are updates on all my existing and future projects. .

EXISTING PROJECTS
If your name is not listed below and you're interested, please let me know! Cost will be roughly the cost to manufacture and assemble + shipping, in the $300-$400 range for various boards.

DUSTOFF B7971 BOARD + ESP32 ADAPTER [ESP32 w/ WiFi Connectivity]

Based on the feedback provided, I have already put in another PCB manufacturing and assembly order for five DUSTOFF displays (no tubes). I am tracking the following individuals are interested (no commitment):

1.) Peter Doroba
2.) Jon Jackson (#2! + I owe working ESP32 back-end implementation of database)
3.) Wo Tu (board not assembled, kit version)
4.) Wayne de Greer (x2?)
5.)

Peter and Jon, your maintained interest has been (happily) noted, looking for continuing interest from Wo and Wayne.

GEORGIA TECH GRADCAP B5971 [ESP32 w/ WiFi Connectivity]
Kind of a neat update on this one, I was recently issued a design patent! I have one remaining (no tubes). Last I was tracking, the following individuals were interested (no commitment):

1.) William "Bill" Eckler

Will, please let me know if you're still interested.

ZM1350 8-TUBE BOARD [ESP32 w/ WiFi Connectivity]

I have two remaining (no tubes). Last I was tracking, the following individuals were interested (no commitment):

1.) Jon Jackson
2.) Paul Wolff

Jon and Paul, please let me know if you're still interested.

UPCOMING PROJECTS

STANFORD GRADCAP ZM1350 [ESP32 w/ WiFi Connectivity]
Especially excited about this one - uses a matrix array of ZM1350s to show off some neat moving graphics! Software is going to a pain and will largely have to be written from scratch, but should be a fun challenge. Design patent application filed on this.

POST-MODERN 8091 CLOCK [ESP32 w/ WiFi Connectivity]
The circuit board is up and running properly, but still trying to design an interesting and post-modern black anodized aluminum case for said clock... should we be neat when complete! I also only have 5 8091s, and am desperately searching for a 6th. Trying to turn this into a collaboration project with an industrial designer!

I'm absolutely still interested in the DUSTOFF board.  I'm also interested in the ZM1350 board however I don't have any tubes and they seem very hard to obtain.  I do have a set of B5971 tubes.  Is it possible to adapt the ZM1350 board to B5971?  I guess what I'm asking is if it's a one piece board or if the displays are on a separate pcb.  If so would it be possible for me to design a display board for the B5971's that would plug into the driver board if it's a multiple board design.

Thanks!

Pete

The only problem in doing that - as far as I can tell - is that the B5971 does not have the same number of segments, I believe that the centre vertical segment is one long piece from top to bottom as opposed to being made up of two parts.
Whilst it may be possible to handle the switching of this with some electronics it would be easier to do it in software - re-mapping all the characters to deal with the difference.
Over at the Smart-Sockets group you will find details of a project for the B5971.
Here is a clip of some of them in action:  https://youtu.be/dCdzolBSNM8
I have adapted the same B-5971 controller boards and software to drive SP-101 panaplex displays and other 7 segment devices.

That is my video, but I didn’t know it before I clicked the link.

I have no idea why it says comments are disabled.   I wonder if someone complained that it wasn’t for kids?  You know Nixie Porn.

That's a good point. I never noticed that the center vertical segment was one piece.

Hi, Peter,

Unfortunately I do not think I would be able to adapt the ZM1350 to the B5971 with a custom adapter board, and the reason is due to the differing resistor requirements between the two for their respective pin sets - it would require a not insignificant adjustment to the main board to get right. I feel your pain about acquiring ZM1350s... I have managed to purchase twelve in the past several years, and nearly half of those were defective in a significant way.
