Are they thermally-activated, or is it something ingenious, like visible/infrared detection ?

They're actually ultraviolet detectors.

Very interesting.I assumed that typical flames didn't radiate anything significant in that lower wavelength region..

Do these detectors have a gas that ionizes when UV is present ? That would make the most sense since UV is higher energy than visible light.
